Golden Grizzlies to entertain Green Bay in Sunday afternoon clash

ROCHESTER, Mich. – Rounding out a four-game homestand, the Oakland Golden Grizzlies will battle the Green Bay Phoenix on Sunday, February 5 at 2 p.m. at the O'rena.

Defeating the Milwaukee Panthers, 74-71, on Friday, February 3, the Golden Grizzlies are .500 on the season at 11-11 and in sixth place in the Horizon League standings at 6-7.

Completing their two-game road swing, which saw them pick up a 56-47 victory over the Detroit Mercy Titans on Friday, Green Bay is 18-4 and tied with the Youngstown State Penguins atop the conference at 11-2.

In the first of the two regular season meetings between these two in 2022-23, the Phoenix topped Oakland, 64-42, on December 29 at the Kress Events Center. Golden Grizzlies senior Breanne Beatty led all scorers with a career-high 21 points in that one, while sophomore Maddy Schreiber paced Green Bay with 14.

OAKLAND RUNDOWN
Tallying at least 13 in nine-straight games, freshman point guard Brooke Quarles-Daniels is the Golden Grizzlies' leading scorer at 12.1 points-per-contest.

Junior forward Alexis Johnson is exactly one point behind at 11.1 per game and Beatty is averaging 10.9.

Sophomore Kennedie Montue has reached double figure points three times in the last six games, including 14 in Friday's win over Milwaukee, and classmate Aaliyah McQueen and junior Linda van Schaik have also carved out key roles for themselves off the bench.

Oakland's 65.8 collective points-per-game are sixth-best in the Horizon League, while the 69.6 the Golden Grizzlies are allowing is eighth-best.

SCOUTING THE PHOENIX
Giving up just 53.4 points-per-game, Green Bay is the strongest defensive team in the conference and is piloted by head coach Kevin Borseth, who has spent 20 seasons leading the program and picked up his 784th career win on Friday, good for 20th on the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) women's basketball all-time list.

Fifth in the Horizon League at 68.1 points-per-tilt, senior guard Sydney Levy is the only Phoenix player averaging double-digits at 11.4.

Sophomore guards Bailey Butler and Cassie Schiltz are both steady contributors, as well, entering play at eight and 8.6 points-per-game, respectively.

SEASON-LONG STORYLINES

NEW FACES FOR GOLDEN GRIZZLIES
Faced with the graduations of Kahlaijah DeanKayla Luchenbach and Brianna Breedy, who combined to average 28.7 points and 9.9 rebounds last season, the Golden Grizzlies brought in a trio of diversely talented transfers in Raquel Ferrer-BernadAlexis Johnson and Linda van Schaik.

A Southfield A&T Warriors graduate, Johnson is a junior forward who played three seasons in Conference USA (C-USA) for the Marshall Thundering Herd, while Ferrer-Bernad is a graduate student point guard who came from a different C-USA program, the Florida International Panthers.

van Schaik, another junior, joined Oakland by way of the Sun Belt Conference's Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks and projects to provide the team with another 3-point shooting threat.

On top of the program's work in the transfer portal, the Golden Grizzlies' 2022 recruiting class features a couple of high-upside players in guard Brooke Quarles-Daniels, a Miss Michigan Basketball candidate a year ago from L'Anse Creuse North, and Lianna Baxter, a 6-foot-1 forward who starred at Oconto and is one of the top-100 scorers in Wisconsin high school history.

BREANNE BEATTY HEADLINES GROUP OF RETURNING PLAYERS
Appearing in all 83 of the program's games over the last three seasons, and starting all but two of them, senior guard/forward Breanne Beatty was named to the Preseason All-Horizon League Second Team on October 18.

The pride of Worthington, Ohio, Beatty is Oakland's leading returning scorer at 9.7 points-per-game in 2021-22.

In addition to Beatty, guards Kennedie Montue and Aaliyah McQueen and forward Miriam Ibezim, all of whom of sophomores, are back with the program and are in line to contribute significantly right from the season's opening tip.

JEFF TUNGATE ENTERS 10TH SEASON
Named the eighth head coach in program history on July 16, 2013, the 2022-23 campaign is the 10th with Jeff Tungate at the helm.

Third on the school's all-time wins list with 126, Tungate and four-year veteran assistant Crystal Davis made some changes to the coaching staff ahead of this season, bringing in Golden Grizzly Hall of Famer and former Mercyhurst Lakers head coach Deanna Richard and Tim Webb, who has extensive coaching experience at both the high school and collegiate levels in Michigan, as assistant coaches.
