NUTRITION SERVICES

Oakland University Athletics has a full-time sport dietitian on staff who offers sports nutrition education and consultation to both teams and individual student-athletes. Sports nutrition focuses on optimizing health and performance through proper fueling and hydration. Individual sports nutrition meetings include nutrient intake analysis, recovery nutrition, meal timing, hydration, supplementation, on- and off-campus eating, travel nutrition, food allergies, disordered eating and more. The dietitian and sports medicine staff collaboratively addresses medical conditions such as nutrient deficiencies, food allergies, injuries, and eating disorders.

In addition, athletes and teams have access to hydration testing, body composition assessment and analysis, team nutrition education sessions, cooking demonstrations, grocery store and cafeteria tours, and the Golden Grizzlies Fueling Station located in the weight room.

MENTAL HEALTH COUNSELING

Roughly one in five adults experience a mental health disorder every year - with this rate being highest among young adults. College student-athletes in particular may be at an even higher risk than their peers due to the high stress and physical demands that come along with sport participation. Some student-athletes may still experience "subclinical" symptoms of mental health disorders (e.g., anxiety, depression, insomnia, misuse of substances) that impair their overall well-being and performance. Oakland University student-athletes have access to mental health counseling services through the Graham Health Center, Henry Ford Health System, and our sport and performance coach.

SPORT & PERFORMANCE PSYCHOLOGY

Sport and performance psychology services are focused specifically on enhancing athletic performance. While the physical and strategic sides of sport are often practiced at length, the mental side is not as commonly integrated into athletic participation. Student-athletes seeking optimal performance recognize the importance of mental preparation, execution, and recovery. Sport and performance psychology services allow student-athletes to learn and practice mental skills, such as attention control and energy management, that can help them more consistently perform at their best. Skills learned in sport and performance psychology sessions can be applied to a student-athlete's athletic, academic, and career pursuits. Oakland University student-athletes and teams can schedule individual and group sessions addressing topics, including communication, team building, coping strategies, mindfulness, and visualization.
