ROCHESTER, Mich. -- Annemarie Hamlet scored a team-high 17 points as Oakland (5-2) won, 73-70, in a four-overtime thriller against Western Michigan (2-5) on Saturday at the Athletics Center O'rena. It was the longest game in women's program history, as four OU players scored in double-digits.
"I'm exhausted and I didn't even play," said Oakland head coach Beckie Francis. "I'm really proud of my team's toughness and the way that we didn't back down. I felt like we got better and better in each overtime. I was really proud of how they held their composure, especially the young players, to come out with that win."
After neither team could gain an advantage through three overtimes, Oakland scored first in the fourth OT session and extended the lead to five points on a 3-pointer by Hamlet as the shot clock expired. It was the largest lead of the game for OU, which never trailed again. The four overtimes were one shy of the NCAA record of five overtime periods.
Victoria Lipscomb played a school-record 58 minutes for the Golden Grizzlies and finished with 13 points and a career-high six steals. The Black and Gold defense finished with 16 steals and forced WMU into a season-high 24 turnovers. Defense was important for both teams, which combined to score just two points during the third overtime period.
With 00.9 seconds remaining in the second overtime and Oakland trailing 62-61, Elizabeth Hamlet was fouled in the act of shooting. She hit one of two free throws to force the game into a third overtime. It was the only miss at the line for Hamlet, who scored a season-high 14 points and was 9-of-10 at the free-throw line.
Trailing by nine points with eight minutes to play in regulation, Oakland's defense held WMU to just two points down the stretch. Olivia Nash sparked the comeback with back-to-back 3-pointers, as part of an 11-0 run for the Golden Grizzlies. Annemarie Hamlet capped the rally with a 3-pointer that put Oakland in front 49-47 with 5:04 to play. Western Michigan tied the score on a layup with 1:01 left in regulation, for the only points by either team in the final five minutes.
The Broncos started the first overtime with a 7-0 run, as the Oakland scoreless streak lasted until the 2:25 mark, when Annemarie Hamlet drilled a 3. The Golden Grizzlies scored seven unanswered points, with Hamlet hitting a 3-pointer to tie the game at 56-56. She finished the night 5-for-9 from three-point range.
The Golden Grizzlies hit a season-high 11 three-point field goals and shot 47.8 percent from beyond the arc. Olivia Nash had 12 points and nine rebounds and remained the only OU player to reach double-figures in every game this season.
Western Michigan shot 37.8 percent from the floor and also had four players in double-digits led by A.J. Johnson, who hit five 3-poitners for 15 points. Miracle Woods and Aurielle Anderson had 12 points each and Alex Morton ended the night with 11. Michelle O'Brien and Corie Buchanan both had double-digit rebounds.
Elena Popkey added seven points and eight rebounds, including a key offensive board that helped OU ice the game. Zakiya Minifee returned to the starting lineup and played 52 minutes with season-highs in points (6) and rebounds (7). Shelby Herrington was 2-for-2 from the field and has now made her last seven consecutive shots.
Oakland returns to the court on Wednesday, hosting Michigan State at the O'rena at 6:30 p.m.
