ROCHESTER, Mich. – Oakland University heads to the Horizon League Championships, April 24-26, as the women's tennis team looks to capture its first-ever conference title.
This year's tournament will be held at the Linder Family Tennis Center in Cincinnati, Ohio, with women's matches beginning at 3 p.m. (ET) on all three days. Oakland earned the No. 1 overall seed, securing a first-round bye and an automatic spot in Saturday's semifinals on April 25. The Golden Grizzlies share the Horizon League regular-season title with Milwaukee, Youngstown State, and Cleveland State after a four-way tie for first place, marking the team's first regular-season championship in program history.
At last year's Horizon League Championships, Oakland fell 4-2 in the quarterfinals to Milwaukee. Sophomores Nisa Bulut and Martyna Piechowicz secured the lone points for the Golden Grizzlies with wins on the No. 2 (6-1, 7-6 (7-5)) and No. 4 (6-3, 6-4) courts, respectively. Bulut was named Horizon League Freshman of the Year and earned All-League First Team honors, while junior Emilia Jarvinen was selected to the All-League Second Team.
This season has been highlighted by Oakland's performance at the Horizon League Individual Championships, where Piechowicz claimed the singles title after defeating freshman teammate Oliwia Klimas. In doubles, the duo of Jarvinen and fellow junior Edie Hammond reached the semifinals before falling to the eventual champions from Youngstown State, 8-7 (11-9).
The women's team has earned multiple Horizon League weekly honors, totaling four so far this season. Klimas, Piechowicz, and Jarvinen each received one Women's Singles Player of the Week award, while Jarvinen and Hammond were named Women's Doubles Team of the Week once. The junior pair also earned All-Academic recognitions, with Jarvinen earning a team nomination and Hammond receiving honorable mention.
Oakland will face the winner of Match One, seeking its first victory over either Cleveland State or IU Indianapolis after falling to both programs, 4-3, earlier this season. The Golden Grizzlies last reached the semifinals in 2019, after defeating Detroit Mercy in the first round, which remains Oakland's only championship victory since joining the league in 2014-15.
After earning the No. 1 position in both the preseason poll and this year's championship seeding, the Golden Grizzlies aim to capitalize on their placement and bring home their first-ever Horizon League championship title.
