CINCINNATI, Ohio – The Oakland University women's tennis team concluded its season after a hard-fought 4-3 loss to Cleveland State in the semifinals of the 2026 Horizon League Championship on Saturday afternoon.

In doubles play, Oakland grabbed an early lead. Sophomore Nisa Bulut and senior Tara Montreuil earned a 6-4 win on the No. 3 court, followed by juniors Edie Hammond and Emilia Jarvinen, who secured another 6-4 victory on the No. 1 court.

To advance to the program's first-ever Horizon League Championship match on Sunday, the Golden Grizzlies needed to take three of the six singles matches. After the Vikings evened the score at 1-1 with a victory on the No. 6 court, Bulut claimed Oakland's first singles point with a 6-2, 6-3 decision on court No. 3. Cleveland State responded by tying the match again with a win on the top court, before Hammond delivered another point, remaining undefeated in conference play with her 6-4, 6-2 victory.

With two matches remaining, Oakland needed one more win to extend its season. Freshman of the Year and All-League First Team selection Oliwia Klimas took the first set on court No. 2 but dropped the next two, battling to the end in a 6-4, 3-6, 5-7 defeat. The outcome then came down to Jarvinen on court No. 5, who forced a third set after losing the first. Despite pushing the match to extra games, Jarvinen narrowly came up short, giving Cleveland State the 6-4, 5-7, 7-5 win and the chance to compete for its first-ever conference championship.

The Golden Grizzlies close the season with an impressive list of accomplishments, including the Horizon League Individual Singles Champion and Runner-Up, three All-League team selections, the Freshman of the Year award, the Coach of the Year award, and the program's first-ever Horizon League regular-season championship.
