ROCHESTER, Mich. – This weekend, the Oakland women's tennis team will close out the regular season by hosting Youngstown State and Cleveland State on April 18 and 19, with both matches set for 4:30 p.m. (EST).
The Golden Grizzlies (6-10, 2-1 HL) most recently traveled to Ann Arbor to take on No. 17 Michigan (15-6, 11-1 Big Ten), falling 7-0 to the nationally ranked Wolverines. Sophomores Martyna Piechowicz and Nisa Bulut each faced top singles opponents on the No. 1 and No. 2 courts, respectively.
Heading into the final week of the regular season, Oakland sits in second place in the Horizon League standings at 2-1, with only Youngstown State ahead at 3-1. Cleveland State is tied for third at 2-2 alongside IU Indianapolis and Milwaukee.
SCOUTING THE PENGUINS
Youngstown State (10-10, 3-1 HL) enters the weekend on a two-match win streak after posting 6-1 home victories over IU Indianapolis and Northern Kentucky. The Penguins' lone conference loss came in a 5-2 defeat to Milwaukee, whom Oakland defeated 5-2 earlier this season.
At this season's Horizon League Individual Championships, the Golden Grizzlies went 3-1 in singles and 1-2 in doubles against the Penguins. Each program claimed a title, with Piechowicz capturing a singles championship and Youngstown State's Greyling and Ovcharova earning the doubles crown.
In last year's regular-season meeting, Oakland fell to Youngstown State, 6-1. The Penguins capitalized in doubles, sweeping both matches 6-0. The Golden Grizzlies' lone point came from Bulut, who battled to a 5-7, 7-5, 1-0 (10-3) victory on the No. 2 singles court.
Youngstown State holds a 13-2 all-time record against Oakland, including a current six-match win streak. The Golden Grizzlies aim to secure their first win over the Penguins since the 2018-19 season.
SCOUTING THE VIKINGS
Cleveland State (7-14, 2-2 HL) also enters the weekend on a two-match win streak after defeating Northern Kentucky, 5-2, and IU Indianapolis, 7-0, at home. The Vikings' two conference losses came in tight 4-3 road decisions at Youngstown State and Milwaukee.
At the Horizon League Individual Championships, Oakland posted a 2-1 singles record and a 1-0 doubles record against Cleveland State, with the teams meeting only a handful of times throughout the event. Similar to the Youngstown State matchup, Oakland dropped a 6-1 decision to the Vikings in last year's regular season, with the lone point once again coming from Bulut after another gritty effort on the No. 2 singles court (5-7, 6-3, 10-6).
Historically, Oakland has recorded just one win over Cleveland State. The programs have met every year since 2006, with the Golden Grizzlies earning their lone victory in 2008. With Horizon League Championship seedings on the line, Oakland looks to snap the Vikings' 20-match win streak.
Before Sunday's matchup against Cleveland State, Oakland will honor its lone senior, Tara Montreuil, with a Senior Day celebration.
Results from both matches will be posted on goldengrizzlies.com once completed.
