TOLEDO, Ohio – Junior Nisa Bulut led Oakland with a 4-2 record as the Golden Grizzlies wrapped up the team portion of their fall schedule at the Rocket Indoor Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 31. Oakland finished the two-day event with a 12-15 combined record.

Oakland competed against host Toledo, Horizon League opponent Cleveland State, and non-conference opponent DePaul.

The Golden Grizzlies opened against DePaul, dropping all three doubles matches before splitting singles play, 3-3. The singles matches were closely contested, with at least one set going to a tiebreak in five of the six matches. Sophomore Oliwia Klimas, senior Edie Hammond, and junior Martyna Piechowicz earned singles victories for Oakland.

Oakland swept Cleveland State in doubles on Friday, then went 4-2 in singles play on Halloween to finish the matchup with a 7-2 record against the Vikings. Graduate student Martina Marušinová, Klimas, and Bulut each picked up wins for a sweep of the Blue Singles, while Piechowicz added a victory in Gold Singles.

The Golden Grizzlies closed the invitational against Toledo, as they did last season. In the final matchup, Oakland went 1-2 in doubles and 1-5 in singles. Bulut and senior Emilia Jarvinen earned a 6-4 doubles win, and Bulut battled to a three-set victory at No. 3 singles, 7-6 (4), 6-7 (3), 1-0 (1).

The invitational featured a strong field, with DePaul recognized as the top Mid-Major program and No. 8 overall in last year's ITA Midwest region, Cleveland State coming off a runner-up finish at the Horizon League Championship after defeating Oakland in the semifinals, and Toledo entering as the reigning MAC champion. The challenging competition made for a valuable test for the Golden Grizzlies to close their fall team schedule.

UP NEXT
The Golden Grizzlies return to the court in late January to take on Michigan. However, Marušinová and Hammond will compete in doubles at the ITA Conference Masters Championships in Rome, Ga., Nov. 5-8, representing the Horizon League.
