ROCHESTER, Mich. – Oakland returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 24, traveling down I-75 to compete in the annual Wayne State Doubles Tournament at the Doris J. & Donald L. Duchene, Sr. Athletic Facility.
Hosted by Wayne State, the fourth annual tournament is scheduled for an 11 a.m. (ET) first serve. Oakland has competed in each of the invitational's previous three editions, and will be joined this year by Findlay and Grand Valley State.
In last year's tournament, the Golden Grizzlies finished with a 4-6 overall record, including a 3-0 sweep of Tiffin. Junior Martyna Piechowicz and sophomore Oliwia Klimas led Oakland's efforts, advancing to the semifinals before falling to the eventual runner-ups from Findlay.
Oakland enters the tournament after yet another strong performance at the Horizon League Individual Championship. Graduate student Martina Marušinová and senior Edie Hammond captured the doubles title, earning a spot in the ITA Conference Masters Championship in early November. The duo secured an extra-set 9-7 victory in the final after battling to a 9-8 (6) quarterfinals win.
Klimas and Piechowicz also advanced to the semifinals, where they fell to the eventual runners-up from Cleveland State, 8-5. Hammond led the singles portion of the championship, reaching the quarterfinals.
Results will be available following the conclusion of the tournament on the women's tennis page at goldengrizlies.com.
