Golden Grizzlies Primed for Late-Season Rematch with Vikings

ROCHESTER, Mich. - The vibes for Oakland are through the roof after a thrilling 67-65 overtime win against Robert Morris.

The Golden Grizzlies won their second overtime game, and their second on last-second shots this season, as Maddy Skorupski notched her first game-winning shot on Saturday.

Skorupski's impactful play off the bench has elevated the play of the team as of late. The sophomore guard from Clarkston, Mich. has scored 10-plus points and grabbed at least one steal in five of the last six games.

Markyia McCormick led all Oakland scorers with 13 points in the game, scoring in double-digits for the 15th time this season, second on the team behind Brooke Quarles-Daniels' 19 double-digit performances, including a 12-point outing against Robert Morris.

McCormick also hit a huge milestone in the victory, eclipsing 1,500 career points, the most on the team. The graduate guard has been essential for Oakland's offensive success, whether it be her on-ball creation or ability to spot up shoot, she is often the engine that leads the Golden Grizzlies in the scoring department.

The biggest change in the Golden Grizzlies has been a re-emergence on the defensive end. Refining and maximizing the very thing that gives them their identity, Oakland saw success, holding three of their last five opponents to under .300 shooting from beyond the arc while grabbing double-digit steals in five of their last seven games.

Oakland ranks sixth in the entire country in steals (280) and steals per game (12.2), a clear showing of what an elite and disruptive defense they can be.

With the end of the season looming, Oakland is primed for a rematch with top-of-the-league Cleveland State. In their matchup earlier this season on the Blacktop, Oakland was just one quarter away from an upset. The Golden Grizzlies lead 34-32 at halftime, and outscored the Vikings in the first and fourth quarters. A big third quarter from Cleveland State, outscoring Oakland 26-9, behind a barrage of Mickayla Perdue triples, was just enough to prevent a comeback from the Golden Grizzlies.

In the game, Quarles-Daniels stuffed the stat sheet, scoring a team-high 15 points (7-of-12), three steals, seven rebounds, and three assists.

All-Time against the Vikings, Oakland is just 4-16, but with a late-season push needed, now is as good of a time for the Golden Grizzlies to put together a string of wins.

SCOUTING THE VIKINGS

Cleveland State has been on a tear, holding first place in the Horizon League with a 21-4 record (12-2 HL). The Vikings have been victors in 10 of their last 11, with the loss coming to Detroit Mercy on Jan. 27.

An offensive powerhouse, the Vikings rank first in the league in scoring (75.6 ppg) and three-point field goal percentage (.378). They also sit second in field goal percentage (.465) and opponent field goal percentage (.386).

With the third and fourth best scorers in the league in Perdue (16.8 ppg) and Colbi Maples (16.5 ppg), this matchup could be an offensive duel between Oakland and Cleveland State.

Catch this late-season showdown with an early tip-off on Thursday, Feb. 15 at 11 a.m. at the Wolstein Center in Cleveland, Oh.
