Golden Grizzlies Hunt for the Season Sweep as they Head to NKU

ROCHESTER, Mich. - The Golden Grizzlies prepare for yet another road game, this time taking on Northern Kentucky, after falling in a close contest to Wright State on Wednesday.

Basketball is a game of runs, and the Golden Grizzlies both had their own and were victims to Wright State runs during the 68-80 loss earlier this week. Oakland started the game red-hot from the floor, but went ice cold in the second quarter. The same was said for the second half, which included a momentous third quarter, only to be overtaken in the final stretch of the game.

Oakland had three players score in double-figures, with Brooke Quarles-Daniels, Linda Van Schaik, and Kennedie Montue all scoring 13 points in the effort.

The game seemed to play at a more patient pace, with the Golden Grizzlies not pushing the pace to their usual tune, yet they still showed impressive flashes of offensive creation and off-ball movement in the half court.

The Golden Grizzlies capitalized on sets run through the high-post, passing and cutting into open space freed up by their movement. The game was a prime showcase of the heights Oakland can reach, showing the hard-nosed defense and perimeter shot making that has beat teams like Green Bay and Detroit Mercy already this season.

Among teams they have already beaten includes their upcoming opponent, Northern Kentucky. To open up the official beginning of league play, the Golden Grizzlies beat the Norse 89-79 on the Blacktop on Dec. 29. Alexis Johnson (21) and Markyia McCormick (20) tallied over 20 points in the game, while Quarles-Daniels also pitched in 18 points and seven rebounds in the game.

In the game the Golden Grizzlies got out to a slow start, but shot .476 (20-of-42) from the floor in quarters two through four, including a .571 (8-of-14) performance in the final quarter to close out the game.

Oakland has won each of the last three matchups against Northern Kentucky, but still hold a 7-10 all-time record against the Norse.

The Golden Grizzlies have a good chance to rattle off consecutive wins in their upcoming games, with their next three opponents being NKU, Youngstown State, and Robert Morris. All three of these teams sit in the bottom of the Horizon League Standings, giving Oakland a real chance to get hot before a tough stretch of games to end the season.

SCOUTING THE NORSE

NKU sits tied for ninth in the Horizon League with a 5-15 record (3-8 HL). Despite a rough season, the Norse have won two of their last three games, most recently beating a sliding Detroit Mercy team 73-54 in Detroit.

Guard Khamari Mitchel-Steen has been sensational for NKU, averaging 13.3 points per game, including a 29-point outburst against Detroit Mercy. They have also had a large impact from three time #HLWBB Freshman of the Week Carter McCray who averages 14 points per game and a league-leading 10.8 rebounds per game.

Oakland looks to pick up their first sweep of the year, this Friday at 7 p.m. in Highland Heights, Ky.
