Golden Grizzlies Look to Stack Back-to-Back Wins as they Travel to Wright State

ROCHESTER, Mich - Oakland looks to string together a pair of league wins as they prepare for a trip to Dayton, Oh. against Wright State.

The Golden Grizzlies have been chasing a .500 league record, sitting at 5-6 Horizon League record after a 65-59 win at IUPUI. Even after a rough shooting night in Indy, The Golden Grizzlies were able to rely on their staples of defense and rebounding as they outrebounded the Jags 54 to 40 and held them to .328 (19-of-58) shooting and 0-of-15 from three.

Brooke Quarles-Daniels helped boost Oakland to a win with more late game heroics, as she sealed the game with a dagger layup with seven seconds left in the game. Maddy Skorupski, who closed out the game with a clutch pair of free throws, had a pair of great games and is hitting a great stride. She scored 13 points in both contests and combined for nine steals in Oakland's last two games. The sophomore guard duo impacts the game on both sides of the floor with endless activity and hustle that ignites the way the Golden Grizzlies like to play.

The Golden Grizzlies look to gain some momentum against a Wright State team just one game ahead of them in the league standings. Oakland has not had consecutive wins or losses since a pair of losses against Toledo (12/17) and Miami (OH) (12/21). This would be the perfect time for Oakland to stack a pair of wins in an important part of the season.

The Raiders have had the Golden Grizzlies' number historically, as Oakland holds just a 5-19 all-time record in the matchup. Despite that, the Golden Grizzlies have won four of the last six games in the series.

The last matchup came on Feb. 28, 2023 where Wright State edged out Oakland 79-69. Quarles-Daniels ended the game with 14 points (7-of-16), nine rebounds, and three assists in the game. Alexis Johnosn also added 11 points (5-of-15) and seven rebounds.

Oakland and Wright State match up very evenly heading into Wednesday's game. The Golden Grizzlies rank a spot higher in scoring offense, coming into the game third (72.8 ppg) while Wright State is fourth (72.1 ppg). They also rank one spot higher than Wright State in scoring defense, allowing 70.5 ppg while The Raiders rank ninth, allowing 71.7 ppg.

The gaps between the two teams come on the boards and beyond the arc. Oakland is the second best rebounding team in the league, while Wright State is the worst. The Golden Grizzlies average five more rebounds per game. On the offensive end, Wright State is the fourth best three-point shooting team with a .335 percentage from deep. The Golden Grizzlies are eighth in shooting from three, holding a .302 percentage.

SCOUTING THE RAIDERS

Wright State has lost three of their last four games, including a two-game losing streak coming into their game against Oakland. Most recently they fell to Green Bay 59-77 in Wisconsin.
While on a bit of a losing skid, the Raiders still pose a threat on both ends of the floor. Graduate guard Alexis Hutchinson is the number one scorer in the Horizon League, averaging 19.2 ppg on .407 field goal percentage. The electric offensive force has scored 30-plus points three times this season and has reached 20 points on nine separate occasions.

Wright State is also home to the number two ranked interior defender in Layne Ferrell, who averages 1.6 blocks per game.

The Golden Grizzlies and Raiders face-off in a crucial battle of the standings on Wednesday, Jan. 31 at 7 p.m.
