Women's Basketball Looks to Continue Metro Series Dominance; Strive for 13 Straight over Detroit

Rochester, Mich. - Women's Basketball gets ready for another tough early season task, as it's their turn to take on league rival Detroit Mercy this Sunday.

Oakland comes into the matchup with an even 3-3 record. Most recently, the Golden Grizzlies closed out a three-game home stand with a tough loss against Purdue Fort Wayne, falling 84-66.

After a two-game stretch where Oakland shot .528 FG% (85-161) and .443 3FG% (27-61), the Golden Grizzlies cooled down against PFW.

Even with their last game being a struggle, Oakland still has the number two ranked offense in the Horizon League, averaging 81.7 PPG as a team, while ranking third in 3FG% (.363).

Markyia McCormick was one of the few Golden Grizzlies who carried a hot hand into their game against PFW. The graduate transfer finished with season-highs of 26 points (9-16 FG) and six three-pointers (6-12 3FG). She remains the team's lead scorer, averaging 14.33 PPG.

Looking to get their league record back up to .500, Oakland needs no extra incentive to come out rejuvenated against the rival Titans.

In recent history the rivalry has been fairly one-sided, with Oakland winning the last 12 matchups, boasting a 19-9 all-time record against Detroit.

Last year's game between the in-state rivals was full of fireworks, as Brooke Quarles-Daniels capped off a 19 point night with a game-winning shot with four seconds left to secure Oakland's 12th straight victory over Detroit by a final score of 66-65.

SCOUTING THE TITANS

After a 2022-23 season where they finished last in the Horizon League with a 5-25 record (3-17 HL), the Titans seem to be headed in the right direction to start this season, lead by Coach Kare Achter in her second season at the helm.

Coming into the rivalry game, Detroit has a 5-3 record, already matching their win total from last year. They also are one of five teams to have won their opening game of league play, beating Youngstown State 59-50 on Nov. 30.

Detroit's last win against Oakland came at Calihan Hall on Feb. 11, 2017 where the Titans won 61-71.

Catch the most recent installment of the Metro Series Rivalry on Dec. 3, at 1 p.m. in Calihan Hall.
