Oakland Seeks Third Straight Win; Hosts Purdue Fort Wayne in Final Game of Home Stretch

Rochester, Mich. - Women's Basketball begins their Horizon League slate, matching up against Purdue Fort Wayne to cap off a three game home stand.

In their last outing, Oakland had one of their most dominant performances ever, beating Madonna 122-38. In the blowout win, every player on the Oakland roster scored, while seven reached double-digits.

While the starters began the game by setting a tough defensive tone, the highlight of their most recent win was the play of the Oakland bench. The second unit for Oakland scored a season high 55 points. Oakland has had numerous contributors off the bench this season. Junior Kennedie Montue, Sophomore Maddy Skorupski, and junior Madison Royal-Davis have all played well off the bench to start the season.

The three bench starts combine for nearly 20 PPG, while adding 26 total steals on the season. They are the true spark plugs that keep the team rolling, no matter the situation.

After their big win, Oakland is one of the top offensive teams in the Horizon League. The Golden Grizzlies rank first in points per game (84.4), fourth in field goal percentage (.439), fifth in three pointers made (41), second in three point percentage (.373), and third in free throws made (79).

Oakland also has two of the three 100-point performances this season among Horizon League teams, scoring 110 against Cleary (11/17/23) and 122 against Madonna (11/25/23). The owner of the other game is their next opponent, as Purdue Fort Wayne scored 124 against Great Lakes Christian (11/11/23).

On the flip side of the ball, the Golden Grizzlies have been elite defensively, especially in their previous two wins.

Oakland has seven players ranking in the top 25 in the league for total steals, the most of any team by far. As a team, their turnover margin is plus 6.80, ranking first in the league. The Golden Grizzlies have forced 121 opponent turnovers so far this season.

Having sophomore Brooke Quarles-Daniels as the primary point of attack defender has paid huge dividends for Oakland. Her aggressive on-ball defense, has led to tons of deflections, while Oakland's wing defenders have stayed ready and have capitalized on playing in the passing lanes.

Another fold being worked into the game plan is a lethal low-post duo for Oakland.

The return of junior forward Miriam Ibezim pairs her along with graduate student Kianni Westbrook for an all-star combination. Both bigs have the capability to face up and score, while running the floor with speed at their size. Westbrook has scored in double figures in four of Oakland's first five games, showing an array of post moves along with an innate ability to flash open for easy looks. Ibezim has tallied 14 rebounds in her two games played, and brings the power and strength as the enforcer for her squad.

SCOUTING THE MASTODONS

Purdue Fort Wayne comes into the game 4-2, currently on a two-game winning streak. They most recently bested Western Kentucky 90-77 on Nov. 26.

In the last matchup between these two teams, Purdue Fort Wayne came away with a 73-64 win (01/26/23). Oakland still holds the lead all-time, with a 13-8 head-to-head record.

The Mastodons are currently led by senior Amellia Bromenschenkel, who's 15 PPG ranks top ten in the Horizon League.

This team is deadly from deep, averaging 10 three-pointers made per game while shooting over .400 from beyond. Both of those marks are number one in the Horizon League.

This matchup between two of the top teams in the league goes down Thursday, Nov. 30 at 7 p.m. at the OU Credit Union O'rena.
