Trio of Golden Grizzlies receive #HLMSOC All-League honors

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Publicly released by the conference at 4 p.m. on Friday, November 4, three Oakland Golden Grizzlies earned 2022 Men's Soccer All-Horizon League status.

Seniors Ville Ahola and Reid Sproat captured spots on the First Team, while goalkeeper Michael Sly, Jr. is an All-Freshman Team honoree.

While this is the first time Ahola and Sproat have been First Team selections, both have been recognized as Second Team All-Horizon League performers before, with both of them making that team a year ago and Sproat also doing so during the Spring 2021 campaign.

Having at least one player receive the honor in four consecutive seasons now, Ahola and Sproat bring Oakland's total of First Team All-Conference selections to eight over the last five years, with Sly, Jr. making it seven All-Freshman Team honorees over that same time frame.

A midfielder from Jarvenpaa, Finland, Ahola is the only Golden Grizzly to start all 17 matches this fall and ranks third on the team with five points (two goals and an assist).

The pride of Auburn, Indiana and a defender, Sproat has started all 15 contests he has appeared in and is third on the club in minutes played with 1,330. His lone goal of the season was the deciding tally in Oakland's 2-1 triumph over the Robert Morris Colonials on September 28, the team the Golden Grizzlies open Horizon League Tournament play against on Sunday in a 1 p.m. quarterfinal.

Thrust into a larger than expected role following the early-season injury to redshirt senior Finn Jurak, Sly, Jr. has started 14-straight tilts for Oakland and leads the Horizon League in save percentage (.869), shutouts (four) and saves-per-match (5.89) in conference play.
