Thompson Records Career-High 11 Saves as Oakland Ties 1-1 with Panthers

MILWAUKEE, Wis. -  Oakland tied Milwaukee 1-1 on Saturday as the Golden Grizzlies kept their unbeaten streak in the conference alive. In a well-rounded match for Oakland, Cal Kurzawa tallied a second-half equalizer, while Cole Thompson kept the Panthers at bay with a career-high 11 saves.

Cole Thompson handled an early shot from Milwaukee's Dominic Zuniga and later saved Jack Wagner's attempt at the 20-minute mark as the Panthers came out swinging. Oakland earned its first corner a minute later before a counter attack let to a goal for Milwaukee in the 31st minute.

After the Milwaukee goal, Oakland created its recorded shot of the half when Andriy Bilous missed high and right 34 minutes in. Thompson added a couple saves in the final seven minutes, keeping Milwaukee within range as the score read 1-0 at halftime.

The Golden Grizzlies created a four-minute spell of pressure to start the second half with shots from Kurzawa, Grant Mateer and Ethan Clarke-Rootham before earning a corner in the 56th minute.

Kurzawa finally brought Oakland level in the 66th minute, putting in a rebound in front after Miller Knestrict's saved shot to make it 1-1. It was Kurzawa's sixth goal of the season and second straight road match with a goal.

After the equalizer, Oakland kept pushing with two more Mateer shots and another corner, but Milwaukee answered with a late surge that included 10 shots and two corners from the 72nd to 83th minute. Thompson made six saves in the second half, including five during Milwaukee's pressure after the match was level, and Oakland saw out the second half to finish with a 1-1 draw.

Thompson recorded a career-high 11 saves over 90 minutes in goal, including seven in the second half. His 11 saves tied for the most in a single game by any Horizon League keeper this season. Kurzawa scored Oakland's goal and put both of his shots on target. Knestrict tallied an assist and put his lone shot on goal. Mateer led Oakland with four shots, including three on goal.
