
INDIANAPOLIS – For the third time in a four-week span, Oakland guard
Alona Blackwell has garnered Nike® Horizon League Freshman of the Week honors, announced the league office on Monday.
Blackwell, a Grand Rapids, Mich. native, averaged 11.0 ppg shooting 9-for-16 (56.3%) from the field with six rebounds aiding Oakland to a 1-1 record in league play. She scored nine points at Cleveland State and followed with 13 points on 5-for-7 shooting helping the Golden Grizzlies to a 86-73 road win at Youngstown State snapping a four-game skid.
Since being inserted into the starting lineup against Detroit Mercy (2/1), Blackwell has scored in double figures in 6-of-7 games averaging 12.1 ppg while shooting 44.3 percent from the field and 40.0 percent from 3-point range. Defensively, she has grabbed 15 total steals (2.1 per game).
Oakland closes out the regular season with a pair of home games beginning with defending league champion Wright State on Thursday, Feb. 27 at 7 p.m.
