OAKLAND’S TUNGATE REMAINS SIDELINED WITH MEDICAL ISSUE

Tungate continues to recover from back pain and will not be with the team this week

ROCHESTER, Mich. – Oakland women's basketball Head Coach Jeff Tungate continues to recover from back pain and will not be with the team this week, the athletics department announced Friday.

"I had two spinal fusions several years back, Tungate said. "Recently, I had an issue flare up again with my back. Thankfully, it will not require another surgery. With proper rest and treatment, I can return to doing what I love soon."

Tungate's doctors have recommended he take time to rest and they will continue to reevaluate the situation. Tungate, who is in his sixth season at the helm of the Golden Grizzlies women's basketball program, missed last week's road swing at Youngstown State and Cleveland State, and will remain sidelined until the doctors clear his return.

"I know this decision is not easy for Jeff but his health and well-being are most important," Director of Athletics Steve Waterfield said. "We fully support him and look forward to his return to daily coaching activities."

Associate Head Coach Eric Stephan will continue to serve as acting head coach until Tungate returns.
