EAST LANSING, Mich. - Tamara Blum forced a first-set tiebreaker in her No. 3 singles match during Oakland's season-opening match at Michigan State Sunday afternoon as the Golden Grizzlies dropped a 7-0 decision to its instate foe at the MSU Indoor Tennis Courts.
Blum started her day with a strong showing in doubles play at No. 2 doubles with teammate Elizabeth Guy. The duo were set to serve with the score at 4-3 before the doubles point was earned by the Spartans. Then, in singles action, Blum pushed Lexi Baylis to a tie-breaker in the first set before falling, 7-3. Baylis then prevailed in straight sets, 7-6 (7-3), 6-1.
"Tammy had a great effort today," said Oakland head coach Heather Redshaw. "She had a great first set in singles. As a team, it was a tough first match against great competition, and now everybody knows what they are doing well and what they have to work on."
Karine Celis refused to relent at No. 2 singles, as her match was the second-to-last to finish despite a 6-0, 6-1 score.
Oakland returns to action Saturday, Jan. 31 when the Golden Grizzlies host Akron at the Bloomfield Tennis and Fitness Center for a 4:30 contest.
