BLOOMFIELD HILLS, Mich. - Cam Sabourin gained momentum from a first-set tie-breaker win to post a 7-6 (10-8), 6-3 victory at No. 1 singles in Oakland's 6-1 setback to UIC Saturday evening at Bloomfield Tennis & Fitness. Oakland slipped to 5-13 overall and 1-5 in League play, while UIC improved to 8-10, 5-1 HL.
"Cam (Sabourin) got a big win at No. 1 singles against one of the top teams in the league," Oakland head coach Heather Redshaw said. "And, despite the scores, we were extremely competitive in doubles today."
UIC took the first point of the day with a sweep of the doubles matches. Karine Celis and Juliana Guevara battled to an 8-4 score at No. 1 doubles. At the No. 2 doubles slot, Tamara Blum and Elizabeth Guy strung together three straight game wins to close within 4-3 midway through their match before falling 8-3.
In the singles matches, UIC grabbed the next three points with straight-set wins at No. 3, No. 2 and No. 4 singles, in order. On court No. 1, Sabourin forced a first-set tie-breaker after swapping the lead in the first set before defeating Kathryn Sharples 10-8 in the tie-breaker. Then, Sabourin jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second set before winning in straight sets with a 6-3 second set.
The final two matches went to third sets, with No. 5 singles going to a true third set, starting before the match was decided. No. 6 singles was decided with a super tie-breaker, with UIC prevailing in both matches.
The Golden Grizzlies will host Valparaiso Sunday, April 12 at 4:30 p.m. for Oakland's final home match of the season.
