ROCHESTER, Mich. - Olivia Nash tallied a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds, while Elena Popkey and Amy Carlton each scored in double figures as Oakland defeated Chicago State, 66-40, in women's basketball action Sunday evening during the team's home opener Sunday evening. The Golden Grizzlies earn their first win of the season and move to 2-2 in its last four home-opening games.
"Anytime you can get a win you'll take it as it's important to win at home," said head coach Jeff Tungate. "We showed some signs of spurts where we played some pretty good basketball. I thought our defense in the first half was solid. Second half, the last ten minutes our intensity wasn't there on the defensive end. We didn't do a good job defending around the basket. Same thing we talked about after Central Florida, we have to make open shots, we have to make wide-open layups, wide-open jump shots if we are going to be a team that contends in this league. We just have to learn and get better and get ready for Michigan State on Wednesday."
Nash recorded her second double-double of the season and the 17th of her career. Popkey tied for the team-high with 11 points and Carlton added 10 points including two 3-pointers. Oakland shot 39.1 percent (25-64) from the field and outrebounded the Cougars 47-41.
Oakland took a 14 point lead into half time and extended its lead to 27 on a 14-2 run in the middle of the second period behind five points each by Popkey and Carlton. The Golden Grizzlies shot 46.2 percent (12-26) in the second half with three 3-pointers.
The Golden Grizzlies led 30-16 at the half as Peyton Apsey had seven points in the period and Nash added five. With the score 7-6, the Golden Grizzlies used a 12-1 run to go up by 12 points as Korrin Taylor and Nash each hit from behind the arc.
Chicago State was led by Jakeisha Wells with a game-high 22 points and a team-best nine rebounds. The Cougars fall to 0-3 with the loss.
Oakland will be on the court on Wednesday when it travels to East Lansing to face in-state for Michigan State beginning at 7:30 p.m. inside the Breslin Center.
