KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- Juliana Guevara won her singles match, as Oakland (1-6) fell to Western Michigan (7-7) on Saturday at the Western Hills Athletic Club. The Golden Grizzlies were also close in doubles play, with Grace Keating and Cam Sabourin winning their match at No. 3 doubles.
"We could've and perhaps should've won the doubles point," said head coach Heather Redshaw. "We were for the majority of the match at No. 1 doubles and our No. 3 team played their best match of the season."
Sabourin and Keating won 8-4 over Kelsey King and Hailey Shanahan at No. 3 doubles to negate an 8-0 loss for OU at No. 2 doubles. Tamara Blum and Emily Raidt battled to hold the lead at No. 1 doubles before falling 8-6.
"We had a really slow start to our singles play and couldn't recover," said Redshaw. "Juliana managed to recover and win, as she fought really hard after losing the opening set to win it in a tiebreaker."
Guevara won 11-9 in an exciting and hard-fought super-set tiebreaker. After dropping her first set 6-2, she won the second 6-0 to complete the 2-6, 6-0, 11-9 win at No. 6 singles.
Sabourin also forced a third-set tie-breaker at No. 4 singles. The entire match was close as Sabourin won the second set 6-3 in a 7-6 (0), 3-6, 10-2 loss. Oakland dropped the remaining singles matches in straight sets.
The Golden Grizzlies are back in action on March 16 with a match at Wright State at 3:30 p.m.
