Elena Popkey scored a game-high 17 points and
Kim Bee finished with a double-double but it was not enough as the Oakland women's basketball team (0-3) was edged by Canisius (2-1), 62-57, Saturday night inside the Athletics Center O'rena.
Bethany Watterworth played in her first game since March 4, 2012 and scored 10 points in nine minutes of action. She finished 3-for-6 from the floor with four free throws. Bee earned her double-double with 15 points, a career-high, and 10 rebounds. It marks the first double-double of her career.
Trailing 60-57 late in the second half, the Golden Grizzlies had a chance to tie with under five seconds remaining but Victoria Lipscomb's 3-pointer hit the side iron and the Golden Griffins sealed the win with two free throws with 0.7 seconds on the clock.
Oakland trailed 23-19 after the first half but were able to take a two-point lead with less than 10 minutes remaining using a 20-13 run led by six points by Bee and two 3-pointers by Popkey. The Golden Grizzlies came out cold to start the game shooting just 20.0 percent (7-35) from the field and trailed by as many as 10 points in the first half. Oakland came back to shoot 46.9 percent (15-32) in the second half to keep the game within reach. OU outrebounded Canisius 42-36.
The Golden Griffins were led by Jen Morabito with 16 points and seven rebounds, while Jamie Ruttle added 13 points on 6-of-8 shooting.
OU will finish up its three-game home stand on Tuesday when they host the Miami Hurricanes on Tuesday night starting at 7 p.m. inside the Athletics Center O'rena.
