BLOOMFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. - Demi Georgakopoulos earned her first singles points of the year, as the Oakland women's tennis team (0-3) fell, 7-0, to Akron (1-0) on Saturday in the home opener at Bloomfield Tennis & Fitness. The Golden Grizzlies won games in five singles matches against the defending Mid-American Conference Champions.
"It was a great opportunity to play against a talented MAC team in Akron," said Oakland head coach Heather Redshaw. "We had some good points during each match, but we know that we need to play better if we want to accomplish our goals."
Georgakopoulos and partner Karen Karoub won Oakland's only game in doubles play, falling 8-1 at No. 2 doubles. Akron claimed the other two doubles matches by 8-0 score lines.
In singles play Georgakopoulos also led the way for OU, falling 6-2, 6-2 to Angelika Jogasuria at the No. 4 position. Brittany Baxter also won multiple games at the No. 5 position, falling 6-2, 6-1. Grace Keating fell 6-2, 6-0 at No. 3 singles and Karoub lost 6-1, 6-1.
Oakland's No. 1 singles player Caitlin Young lost her match 6-0, 6-1 to Zara Harutyanyan. Caryn Kimmel lost her match 6-0, 6-0 to Natalia Kuvakina at No. 6 singles.
Having started the season against three talented opponents, Oakland will take time off to practice until the start of February. Oakland will head to the west side of the state to play Bradley on Feb. 11 in a neutral site game at Western Michigan. OU will also face Western Michigan on Feb. 12.
