BLOOMFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. - Senior Amanda Pettey and freshman Grace Keating won a tiebreaker to claim their doubles match 8-7, but the Oakland women's tennis team (5-10) lost 7-0 to Wisconsin - Milwaukee (11-8) on Friday in the team's first home match of the season at Bloomfield Tennis & Fitness. Friday's match began with singles play, followed by the doubles matches.
"It wasn't our best day, but we never quit," said Oakland head coach Heather Redshaw. "Hopefully we can get out to a better start with doubles first tomorrow and build from there."
Pettey and Keating rallied from 5-0 down to tie their doubles match 7-7 and force a tiebreaker. The Golden Grizzlies' duo broke on the first serve to take and early lead before eventually winning 7-5 in front of a boisterous home crowd.
The visiting Panthers won all of the singles matches in straight sets. The Golden Grizzlies put up a fight with junior Karen Karoub battling 6-4 in the first set before dropping her No. 2 singles match 6-4, 6-0 to Sammi Schoen.
Junior Demi Georgakopoulos was the last singles match off the court as she battled in a 6-2, 6-4 loss at No. 4 singles against Brittany Skemp. Freshman Grace Keating also battled in a long match at no. 3 singles falling 6-2, 6-1.
Milwaukee won No. 1 doubles 8-1 and claimed the doubles point with an 8-4 win at the No. 2 position.
The Golden Grizzlies are back in action on Saturday against Valparaiso at 2:30 p.m. The match is Oakland's final regular season match and will be hosted at Bloomfield Tennis & Fitness.
