FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Junior Demi Georgakopolous won 6-4, 1-6, 6-3 at No. 5 singles to clinch a 4-3 win for the Oakland women's tennis team (1-3) over Bradley (2-6) at the Pine Ridge Racquet Club on Saturday. The win snaps an 11-match losing streak for the Golden Grizzlies dating back to last season and is the first win over a non-league opponent since the 2009 season.
"It was a great win for the team," Said Oakland head coach Heather Redshaw. "All of the matches took a long time as we played some very deep points. I don't think the scores truly reflect the challenges we posed across the board in all matches."
The Golden Grizzlies jumped out to an early lead by winning the doubles point. Freshman Grace Keating and Senior Amanda Pettey won the No. 3 doubles match 8-3 and junior Caitlin Young and senior Jackie Dinicu clinched the point by winning a tiebreaker 7-3 to claim the 9-8 win. It was the first time that Oakland has won the doubles point this year.
Pettey made it a 2-0 lead for Oakland by beating Briggitte Graf 6-1, 6-1 at No. 6 singles. The Braves rallied by winning three straight singles matches to take a 3-2 lead. Junior Karen Karoub tied the match with a win at No. 3 singles beating Adele Henke in three sets, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5.
With the score tied, the match came down to Georgakopoulos, who came through with her first singles win of the season. The win ensured that every player on the OU roster won a match on the day.
The Golden Grizzlies are back in action on Mar. 6 with a match at Cleveland State that begins at 5 p.m.
