EAST LANSING, Mich. - Bethany Watterworth scored 12 points and Victoria Lipscombadded 10, for the Oakland women's basketball team (2-3) in a 67-42 road loss to Michigan State (5-2) at the Breslin Center on Sunday. The starters accounted for 36 points for the Golden Grizzlies.
"I think that their size bothered us tonight," said Oakland head coach Beckie Francis. "I think that we were able to battle with them throughout the first half, but eventually their size wore on us and they were able to take advantage."
Oakland battled in a back-and-forth first half, which featured four ties and six lead changes. Watterworth hit a 3-pointer to pull Oakland within one point at 25-24 with 1:32 to play before the half. The Spartans responded with a 5-0 run to take a 30-24 lead at the break.
Lipscomb pulled Oakland back to within four points at 30-26 when she hit the opening basket of the second half. However, MSU responded with a 12-0 run and eventually pushed the lead to 20 points with 10 minutes to play. Porsche Poole led the way for the Spartans with 16 points on 6-for-14 shooting.
Brittany Carnago added six points and two blocks for OU, while Peyton Apseycame off the bench to lead Oakland in rebounding with six. The Golden Grizzlies hit 31.7 percent from the field and did not attempt a free throw for the first time in over seven years. Both Watterworth and Lipscomb knocked down two 3-pointers each for OU.
Poole was the only MSU player in double-digits, while Lykendra Johnson and Taylor Alton added nine points each. Becca Mills also came off the bench for eight points and six rebounds, as the MSU reserves outscored the OU bench 23-6. The Spartans finished the game shooting 42.1 percent from the field and went 13-of-20 from the free-throw line. MSU also earned a 47-30 rebounding edge, which included 18 offensive rebounds.
The Golden Grizzlies return to the Athletics Center O'rena for their next game on Thursday at 4 p.m. The game is a doubleheader with the OU men's team.
