Drew Jenison (Jenison, Mich.) led Oakland in the first game, going 2-2 at the plate with a home run, two RBI and two runs scored, while sophomore
Andrew Stafford (Sterling Heights, Mich.) was 3-5 with a home run and three RBI in game two. Oakland jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning of the opener with a solo homer from Jenison and an RBI single to left field by sophomore
Dan Ryan (Saginaw, Mich.). The lead would not last long, however, as the Thunderbirds evened things up 2-2 in the bottom of the inning with a two-run homer by Chester Wilson. SUU took its first lead of the game in the second when Robert Sandstrom led off the inning with a home run. The Thunderbirds added a run in the third to extend the lead to 4-2. The Golden Grizzlies knotted the game 4-4 in the fourth with a two-RBI single by freshman

Andy Shepherd (Rapid City, S.D.) drove in Jenison from third for the 5-5 score. The Golden Grizzlies held SUU off the board in the bottom of the inning to maintain the tie until the top of the sixth when OU once again took the lead with three runs. Freshman
Tommy Jablonski (Rochester Hills, Mich.) scored on a wild pitch, while Jenison???s sacrifice fly to right field allowed Kozuch to come home from third. Stafford singled through the left side to drive home an additional run and give OU an 8-5 advantage. The Thunderbirds answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning to even things up once again 8-8. Zablan and Cameron Nelson led off the inning with back-to-back solo home runs, while Joe Wright drove in the third run to tie the game. Kozuch hit a single through the left side with two outs to drive home a run and retake the lead for Oakland 9-8 in the top of the seventh. But the Thunderbirds rallied for two runs in the bottom of the inning for the 10-9 victory. Freshman LHP
Andrew Estes (Blissfield, Mich.) earned the start for the Golden Grizzlies, giving up nine hits, five earned runs and three walks while striking out five in four innings. He was relieved by senior RHP
Scott Boleski (Dearborn Heights, Mich.), who threw one inning before giving way to junior RHP
Mike Takashima (Rochester Hills, Mich.). Takashima was charged with the loss as he gave up four hits and two unearned runs in 1.2 innings of work. Relief pitcher Jacob Noyes was credited with the win for the Thunderbirds. In game two Oakland put runners on base in both the first and second innings but was unable to bring home a run. Meanwhile OU put the Thunderbirds down in order in the first two innings and the game remained scoreless through two. Stafford put the Golden Grizzlies up 2-0 in the third with a two-run homer, his third of the year. But SUU scored three runs in the bottom of the inning to overtake Oakland and go ahead 3-2. Zablan drove in a pair of runs with a single up the middle, while Chester Wilson???s bases-loaded sacrifice fly later in the inning allowed Colby Ford to score from third. Senior
Kevin Chalifour (Zeeland, Mich.) and Stafford each drove in runs in the fourth to put Oakland in the lead once again 4-3. But the Thunderbirds scored eight times in the bottom of the inning to retake the lead 11-4. Chester Wilson hit a grand slam while Zablan, Wright and Jacob Romney accounted for four RBI between them. Southern Utah added seven runs in the fifth, highlighted by a three-run homer from Romney and an RBI triple by Zablan. SUU went on to score one run in the sixth and two in the eighth for the 21-4 final. Senior RHP

Tim Barry (Skokie, Ill.) each threw relief innings for Oakland. Thunderbird starter Alec Reichle earned the win for SUU, scattering nine hits and four runs (one earned) in six innings. Kyle Hamman, Devin Everett and Kyle Melling combined to throw three scoreless innings in relief. Oakland returns to action Tuesday when it hosts Wayne State in non-conference action at OU Baseball Field at 3:00 p.m.
