Griffith and Lauinger Homer as Oakland's Season Comes to a Close at the Hands of the Norse

DAYTON, Oh. - The Golden Grizzlies fought hard, but weren't able to overcome a rough seventh inning as their season came to an end in a 8-10 loss to Northern Kentucky (NKU).

Despite a loss, Oakland dominated the first half of the game, having two seperate leads of four or more runs, and tallied more hits (10) than the Norse (6).

The Golden Grizzlies continued their potent offense that they showed last night, right out the gate in this one. Brandon Nigh started his day with an RBI double, scoring Matt McGann who reached on a walk. John Lauinger pushed an RBI single through the right side of the infield in the very next at bat, scoring Nigh as Oakland led 2-0 in the blink of an eye.

In response the Norse jumped right onto the scoreboard as well, scoring three in their first trip up to bat, highlighted by a pair of RBI doubles from Josh Williams and Jake Paulick, as NKU took a 3-2 lead after the first frame.

After two scoreless frames on both sides, Oakland knotted the game back up as Taylor Tomlin hit a fly ball just deep enough to score Sam Griffith, who tagged up from third.

Oakland retook the lead  in the top of the fifth with some rare power from Lauinger and Sam Griffith as they both hit their second homers of the season in the inning. Lauinger slammed a solo shot and Griffith with a three-run bomb as the Golden Grizzlies lead blossomed to 7-3.

Ethan Glassman pitched a gem on the mound for Oakland, seeing his day end after tossing five innings, allowing just four hits with four strikeouts. After a rough first inning, Glassman shut down the NKU offense, throwing four scoreless innings to close out his day.

Jaxon Easterlin would close out the sixth inning, giving up just one run, keeping NKU at bay and setting up the Golden Grizzlies for another score in the top of the seventh as a Trent Rice laser down the left field line turned into an RBI double and an 8-4 lead.

Oakland would lose control of the lead in the bottom of the seventh as NKU scored six runs via a sacrifice fly, an Oakland fielding error, and four bases loaded walks as the Norse took a 10-8 lead.

The Golden Grizzlies threatened to retake the lead in the top of the eighth with the bases loaded and no outs, but they were unable to manufacture any deep or solid contact to score a run, keeping the score unmoved.

Down to their final three outs of the season, Oakland was able to move a pair of runners to second and third base with one out left in the top of the ninth, but a slow rolling grounder to fourth would end the game and Oakland's season.

Nigh (3-for-5), Lauinger (2-for-3, 2 RBI, HR), Clark (2-for-4), and Griffith (2-for-3, 3 RBI, HR) all finished the season strong for the Golden Grizzlies at the plate.
