Golden Grizzlies Break Program Stolen Bases Record to Eliminate Penguins; Set up for Meeting with Norse in Next Round

DAYTON, Oh. - The Golden Grizzlies used record-breaking aggressiveness on the basepath, and extremely timely hitting to surge past the Youngstown State Penguins (YSU) with a 22-18 victory, extending their season behind a pair of late-inning and extra inning surges.

Oakland got to work immediately, as a Trent Rice leadoff single turned into him reaching third base on a steal and a Penguins error. Rice would score on a sacrifice fly by Matt McGann and give Oakland a 1-0 lead just one out into the game.

Carter Hain would draw a walk on newly into the game pitcher Aidan English, and Jack Lux would knock a sacrifice fly to center field to put the Golden Grizzlies up 3-0. John Lauinger, who previously reached on a hit by pitch, took advantage of a throwing error by the YSU catcher and snuck home to add one last run before the end of the inning, closing out an electric opening frame by Oakland.

YSU would flip the script in the bottom of the second as Kyle Fossum gave the Penguins the lead with a three-run home run over the left field wall as Oakland now trailed 4-5.

The back-and-forth affair continued in the top of the third as Carter Hain found the gap for a two-RBI single, scoring Lauinger and Nigh who both reached on walks, retaking the Golden Grizzlies lead at 6-5. Rice would increase the lead as he showed why he is the fastest player in the conference, beating out a slow roller for an infield RBI single to put Oakland up 7-5.

Continuing the trend of scores in each inning, YSU cut the lead in half in the third as Brayden Kuriger sliced a solo homerun to right field, as the score read 7-6 in favor of Oakland as the slugfest continued on both sides.

Oakland made the run right back to start the fourth as Matt McGann hit a no-doubter of a homer as the first batter of the inning, his team-leading eighth of the season, giving Oakland an 8-6 lead and a two run cushion once again.

A pair of bases loaded walks and a fielder's choice in the bottom of the fourth would swing the lead back in the favor of YSU 9-8, but Ryan Uhlenhake would take the mound and close out the inning for the Golden Grizzlies, striking out the final batter to flip the frame.

The scoring continued into the next inning as the Golden Grizzlies took a 10-9 lead as Sam Griffith belted an RBI single to right field to tie the game, and a hard-hit ball by Tomlin forced an error by the YSU shortstop, allowing a run to score and the lead to return to the Oakland side.

YSU immediately forced the third tie of the game through five innings as Brady Shannon kicked off the bottom of the fifth with a solo homerun, knotting the game at 10 runs apiece.

After the first scoreless half inning since the second inning, the Penguins retook the lead in the sixth on an RBI double by Beckley, but pitcher Ryan Donley kept the damage to a minimum, forcing a pair of foul ball fly outs to end the inning as Oakland trailed 10-11.

The momentum turned to the Penguins side even further in the bottom of the seventh as they added five runs in the inning, extending their cushion to six runs.

Oakland turned their rally caps on in the top of the eighth as they used good patience in the box to draw walks to load the bases, setting up a RBI infield single from John Lauinger, and a bases clearing three-RBI triple from Carter Hain pulled Oakland within two runs, with the score tallying 14-16. Two more runs would come through on wild pitches from YSU, as Hain and Boston Halloran scored to tie the game at 16 runs.

With the game all tied up, Brody Fahnstock stepped to the mound and delivered a fantastic inning for Oakland, holding the Penguins to their first scoreless frame of the night, setting up a dramatic ninth inning.

Oakland would continue to put runners on base and capitalize on errors by JJ Tylicki, as the Penguins suffered their fourth passed ball or wild pitch in the last two innings, as Aidan Schuck slid home to give Oakland a 17-16 lead.

Down to their final out and final strike, Beckley delivered a season-saving hit for YSU, sending a solo homerun over the right field to tie the game at 17, eventually sending the game to extras.

With no outs in the top of the tenth, Oakland scored on the fourth YSU error of the night as Aidan Schuck hit a tough to field ball at shortstop, allowing Clark to cross the plate for the lead. Another run would score on a McGann RBI sacrifice fly, giving Oakland a 19-17 lead.

Oakland would extend their lead and add some much-needed insurance as Lauinger lined a two-RBI double down the right field line. Oakland would score one more run on a Boston Halloran RBI infield single, taking a 22-17 lead.

Oakland finished the game with 12 stolen bases, setting a new program record. Rice (2), Tomlin (2), and Lauinger (2) all recorded multiple steals.

The squad also finished with 15 hits, two shy of their season high, and their most runs of the season (22) as well. Hain continued his tournament tear, going 2-for-5 with a season-high six RBI. Rice (2-for-6), Lauinger (2-for-5, 3 RBI), and Lux (2-for-3) all recorded multiple hits in the game.

Oakland is now set to face-off with the Northern Kentucky Norse tomorrow, Friday May 23, at 3 p.m. in another elimination game.
