Baseball Falls to Wright State; Sets Up Rematch with Penguins in Elimination Game

DAYTON, Oh. - The Golden Grizzlies had their postseason run redirected by the host team, Wright State (WSU), as Oakland fell 8-2 in the opening game of day number two of the Horizon League Championship.

Oakland saw their first opportunity to score in the top of the third, as a Trent Rice infield single and Sam Griffith walk saw runners on second and third, but with two outs the Golden Grizzlies weren't able to move the runners forward, keeping the game knotted and scoreless.

After a scoreless first two frames on both sides, behind three early strikeouts by Garman, the Raiders broke through in the bottom of the third on a sacrifice fly by Gus Gregory as the Raiders led 1-0.

Wright State would strike again just one inning later as Luke Arnold knocked an RBI triple to center field, tacking on another run for the Raiders. Cam Gilkerson added an RBI single to bring Arnold around as WSU increased their lead to 3-0. A passed ball and a grounder by Patrick Fultz added two more for Wright State before the end of the inning as the Golden Grizzlies now fell behind 0-5.

The Golden Grizzlies would finally get on the scoreboard in the fifth as a leadoff Jack Lux double eventually led to him crossing the plate after a Sam Griffith ground ball with Lux at third scored Oakland's first run of the game. Another run would cross the plate on a throwing error by the Raiders, helping Trent Rice, who was previously hit by  a pitch, score all the way from first base as the Golden Grizzlies pulled closer at a score of 2-5.

With Oakland now breathing down their neck, Wright State separated slightly again as Boston Smith launched a solo home run in the bottom portion of the fifth, putting the WSU lead back at four with the score 2-6.

The Raiders would add two more runs in the bottom of the eighth, one on an RBI double by Hunter Warren, as they would put the game away at 8-2.

Taylor Tomlin was the only Golden Grizzly with multiple hits, going 2-for-4. Hain and Lux both registered a double as Oakland tallied five hits to WSU's 11.

The Golden Grizzlies gear up for a nightcap rematch against Youngstown State, who they routed 13-2 in the opening day of the Championship, as both teams face-off in a win or go home game at 7 p.m. tonight, May 22.
