Softball Moves Wayne State Doubleheader to Monday, March 9th

ROCHESTER, Mich. - The Golden Grizzlies will make the short trip to Detroit on Monday, Mar. 9 for a non-conference doubleheader against the Wayne State Warriors. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m., with game two to follow at 5:30 p.m. The games were originally scheduled to be played on Saturday, Mar. 7, but were moved to Monday due to weather concerns.

Oakland enters the matchup looking to bounce back after a challenging stretch of games on the road, playing a tough slate of teams, including no. 5 Alabama last week. The Golden Grizzlies have shown bright flashes of improvement, still holding the lowest team ERA (3.75) and the second most hits (116) in the Horizon League.

Offensively, Oakland has been led by several key contributors in the lineup who have provided both power and on-base production. Multiple hitters have paced the Golden Grizzlies with averages above the .400 mark early in the season, led by Alyssa Balcom and Kam Troyer, who both sit in the top ten of batting average in the conference.

The Warriors and Golden Grizzlies will showdown for just the seventh time in program history, and for the first time since 2006. Oakland looking to secure their second consecutive win over Wayne State in the game.

Wayne State enters Monday's action with a 4-3 record, opening its season with several strong performances of its own.

The Warriors have produced a balanced offensive attack, with multiple players batting over .300 and contributing run production throughout the lineup, led by sophomore shortstop Hunter Near, who is batting above .500 in the limited sample size of their season so far.

The Warriors' pitching staff has been another key component of their early success, posting solid ERA numbers while holding opponents to limited scoring opportunities. Ace Sydney Long is sure to make the start against Oakland, and has a 2.40 ERA with three complete games tossed already this season.

Monday's matchup provides a regional showdown between two programs located less than an hour apart. With both teams featuring productive lineups and experienced pitching staffs, the doubleheader is expected to provide a competitive midweek test for both squads as they continue the early portion of the 2026 season.
