ROCHESTER, Mich. – The Golden Grizzlies are set to compete in the annual Tom Tontimonia Invitational on Oct. 5-6 at the par-71, 7,102-yard Lakewood Country Club in Westlake, Ohio.
Oakland has participated in the Tom Tontimonia Invitational since CSU rebranded its annual golf tournament in the 2018-19 season. The tournament is named after longtime Cleveland State athletic administrator Tom Tontimonia.
Bowling Green, Cleveland State, Dayton, Detroit Mercy, Green Bay, IU Indy, Malone, Marshall, Northern Kentucky, Oakland, Purdue Fort Wayne, and Youngstown State will compete in the invitational. With all but three Horizon League programs participating, the Tom Tontimonia Invitational will provide an early preview of the Horizon League Championship in late April.
Seniors Matteo Rocco, Robert Burns, Jack Zubkus, and Ben Willis, along with freshman Marshall Morency, will make up Oakland's roster at the tournament. Junior
Brennan Sullivan will compete as an individual. The Golden Grizzlies will tee off with two golfers from Dayton and one of their own teammates.
Oakland has seen considerable success at the Tom Tontimonia Invitational. In its last seven appearances, the Golden Grizzlies have finished in the top two six times, including three titles in the last five appearances.
Last season, Oakland finished runner-up with a six-over 858, trailing only champion Green Bay. The team finished among the top 25 individually, while Rocco led Oakland as an individual golfer with a sixth-place finish after carding a one-under 212.
Both Monday and Tuesday will feature a shotgun start at 9 a.m. ET. The Golden Grizzlies will begin on holes seven through nine on Monday. The invitational will feature 36 holes on Monday, followed by the final 18-hole round on Tuesday.
Live stats for each round will be available on Clippd.
