Softball Travels to Youngstown for Final Road Series of the Season

ROCHESTER, Mich. - The Golden Grizzlies return to conference play as they head on the road for one last series this season, taking on the Youngstown State (YSU) Penguins.

Oakland is looking to snap a three-game losing skid and to reignite their bats, having scored just one run over their last three contests.

Despite the struggles as a team, Brooklyn Plitz has been sensational recently for the Golden Grizzlies, batting .391 (9-for-23) in Oakland's last two conference series as she has lifted her batting average above .300 for the season.

Kenna Bommarito has also come on strong in the back half of her freshman season, not only batting .294 in conference play while also dominating in the circle against Horizon League opponents with a 3.46 ERA and 63 strikeouts.

Oakland will have a prime opportunity to get things going at the plate against the Penguins this weekend, as YSU has the league's worst team ERA (6.42) and have allowed opponents to score double-digit runs in 12 games this season.

YSU has done a complete 180 since last season where they won the regular season title. In 2025 they are last place in the conference with a 3-15 Horizon League record.

The Golden Grizzlies have won three of their last four contests against the Penguins, including a series win last season as Oakland walked-off the series opener.

This upcoming series will be the first trip back to Youngstown since the 2024 Horizon League Championship, where Oakland struggled and fell in both of their games. During the regular season however, the Golden Grizzlies have left Youngstown victorious in two of their last three visits.

Even with a disappointing season for the Penguins, they have been stronger at their home field, holding a 6-8 record compared to a 2-16 mark on the road.

YSU has also proven they are capable at the plate, ranking fifth in the conference with a .271 batting average, led by Lydia Wilkerson, who's .383 batting average is fourth best in the Horizon League.

The weekend series begins on Saturday, Apr. 26 with a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m., with a closing single matchup on Sunday, Apr. 27 at noon.
