Golden Grizzlies Aim to Stay Hot at Home as they Host Penguins in Weekend Series

ROCHESTER, Mich. - The Golden Grizzlies look to bounce back after a rough series as they host the Youngstown State Penguins (YSU) in their third conference series of the season.

Despite the close series loss in PFW, Oakland saw positives across the board, losing by a total of three runs (20 to 23) in the series. They put up their season high in runs (14) in the series opener, behind three home runs and six RBI from Matt McGann in a career game for the catcher.

On the mound, Oakland's 7.78 team ERA is the third lowest in the conference, while freshman Grant Garman's 5.35 ERA and .252 opposing batting average both rank in the top four of Horizon League pitchers.

Oakland is looking for revenge against the Penguins, who beat the Golden Grizzlies in the Horizon League Championship Tournament last season.

YSU has beaten the Golden Grizzlies in three of their last four meetings, but The Golden Grizzlies have fared well at home against the Penguins, winning four straight in Rochester, dating back to the 2022 season. This adds to Oakland's exceptionally strong record at home this season as well, holding a 4-1 mark when playing at the Oakland Baseball Field.

The Penguins (5-22, 2-7 HL) have not been a huge threat on the road to start the 2025 campaign, holding a 1-14 record away from Youngstown. That one win is their most recent one as they routed Toledo 13-3.

Youngstown State has also had a bumpy start on the mound, with the lowest team ERA (9.41) in the Horizon League. They have allowed an opponent to score 10 or more runs in 13 games this season.

On the flip side, they have the third highest batting average in the conference (.276), led by senior outfielder Kyle Fossum, who's .452 batting average is pacing the conference. He also leads the league in slugging percentage (.885), on base percentage (.547), hits (47), doubles (12), and home runs (11).

The Oakland prolific pitching and Youngstown high-powered hitting will be on full display this weekend, beginning on friday, Apr. 4, streamed on ESPN+
