Softball Gears Up for Weekend Gauntlet at Ohio State Tournament

ROCHESTER, Mich. - The Golden Grizzlies look to regain some early-season momentum as they prepare to play five games down in Columbus, Oh. this weekend as a part of the  Ohio State Tournament.

Despite a rough showing in North Alabama, Oakland saw a ton of positive light, including taking the Lions to 11 innings in the series finale.

Individually, freshman Kayla Turmell smashed her first collegiate home run over the weekend, joining Kam Troyer as the only Golden Grizzlies to homer this season.

Sophomore star Brooklyn Plitz also continues to shine at the plate, tallying five hits as she raises her team-high .324 batting average.

FRIDAY, MAR. 7 vs. MERRIMACK COLLEGE & OHIO STATE | 12:30 & 3:00 PM

The Golden Grizzlies will kick things off with two games on Friday, Mar. 7 beginning at 12:30 p.m. against Merrimack College, then they will retake the diamond at 5:30 p.m to face the host team Ohio State.

Merrimaick College Has had a rough start to their 2025 campaign, entering the tournament with an 0-5 record and having just scored four runs in those five games, while batting just .190 on the season.

The Buckeyes (13-4-1) is coming off a big weekend playing in the Bulldog Classic at Georgia University, going 4-1 and on are riding back-to-back wins coming into this weekend.

Ohio State is batting an impressive .337, led by sophomore Jasmyn Burns, who is a blazing .510 with six home runs and 19 RBIs thus far.

Oakland's matchup with the Buckeyes will be streamed on Big Ten plus.

SATURDAY, MAR. 8 vs TEXAS & KENT STATE | 3:30 & 6:00 PM

Oakland will face the second ranked team in the nation in the Longhorns on Saturday.

Longhorns currently hold a 20-1 record with a nine game winning streak coming into the week.

During the course of the season they have won 10 of their games in less than seven innings, dominating the plate with a .383 team batting average, with eight players hitting over .345.

They also have a tough pitching rotation, with a pair of aces in Citlaly Gutierrez (0.52 ERA) and Cambria Salmon (1.79 ERA).

The Golden Flash have also struggled early in the season, losing 10 of their last 12 games as they hold a 5-14 record.

Even with a rough team start, senior and Michigan native Delaney Robeson has been dominant for Kent State, hitting .458 while earning 19 RBI and a trio of home runs.


SUNDAY, MAR. 9 @ OHIO STATE  | 3:00 PM

The Golden Grizzlies will finish the weekend with one last matchup against the host team Buckeyes, as their last test before officially entering conference play on Friday, Mar. 14.
