MILWAUKEE, Wis. - In the quarterfinal round of the #HLMBB Championship, the No. 6 Oakland Golden Grizzlies took care of the No. 3 Milwaukee Panthers inside Klotsche Center with a final score of 72-64, advancing the Golden Grizzlies to the #HLMBB Championship semifinal round.
The Golden Grizzlies will now face the top-seeded Robert Morris Colonials in the semifinal round in Indianapolis, Ind., inside Corteva Coliseum. The game will start at 7:00 p.m. ET and will be streamed live on ESPNU.
Allen Mukeba led the Golden Grizzlies (16-17, 11-9 HL) in scoring, finishing the game with 21 points and seven rebounds while going 9-for-9 from the field.
Buru Naivalurua had a solid showing, putting up 20 points and six rebounds.
On the other side of the court, Milwaukee (21-11, 14-6 HL) was led by Themus Fulks, who scored a team-high 20 points while dishing out six assists. Jamichael Stillwell was another Panther who made an impact. He finished with 16 points, eight rebounds and six assists.
Buru Naivalurua got the Golden Grizzlies on the scoreboard first, hitting a tough layup on Oakland's first possession. Milwaukee responded on the next possession in the form of an AJ McKee layup, marking the start of an exciting matchup.
The Panthers established an early 6-2 lead with the first underway. Despite finding themselves down early, the Golden Grizzlies quickly battled back with a three from
DQ Cole and multiple layups from Naivalurua, shifting the score in favor of Oakland, 9-8, at the 16:22 mark.
Midway through the first, Oakland stayed ahead of the Panthers thanks to some solid inside play from Mukeba and a pair of three-pointers coming off the hands of
Nassim Mashhour and
Malcolm Christie. With eleven minutes left in the first, the Golden Grizzlies led 23-13.
The Golden Grizzlies and the Panthers went on runs throughout the rest of the first. However, the entire time, the Golden Grizzlies remained in the driver's seat, refusing to let Milwaukee take back the lead.
As the first came to a close,
Jaylen Jones and Naivalurua scored the final two baskets of the half, giving the Golden Grizzlies some momentum heading into the break with a 39-31 lead over the Panthers.
At the half, the Golden Grizzlies shot at a .531 (17-for-32) rate from the field, while the Panthers shot at a .519 (14-for-27) mark from the floor. Oakland converted .357 (5-for-14) of their looks from three, while Milwaukee shot at a .167 (1-for-6) clip from beyond the arc. Off the glass, the Golden Grizzlies held a slight advantage, outrebounding the Panthers 13-12.
With the start of the second half underway, the Golden Grizzlies leaned on Mukeba early, who scored the first six Golden Grizzly points of the second. A few possessions later, Naivalurua made both of his attempts at the charity stripe before J. Jones converted at the rim on a fastbreak to expand the Oakland lead to 49-37.
Halfway through the second, the Panthers showed some fight. Milwaukee's John Lovelace Jr. knocked down a trio of threes before Kentrell Pullian hit one of his two attempts from the free throw line, putting the Panthers down 56-51 to the Golden Grizzlies.
After keeping the Golden Grizzlies without a field goal for nearly three minutes, a three from McKee brought Milwaukee within striking distance of Oakland, as the Panthers made it a one-possession game with five minutes left to go.
Down the stretch, J. Jones lifted the Golden Grizzlies to a six-point lead after burying two three-pointers late. With the Panthers forced to foul Oakland the rest of the way, the Golden Grizzlies put the game on ice, winning, 72-64.
The Golden Grizzlies finished the game shooting at a .519 (28-for-54) rate from the field, while the Panthers shot at a .519 (28-for-54) clip from the floor. Oakland shot at a .389 (7-for-18) clip from three, and Milwaukee converted .278 (4-for-12) of their looks from deep. Off the glass, the Golden Grizzlies finished ahead of the Panthers, 31-22.
