Kampe Sets Horizon League Conference Wins Record; Golden Grizzlies Rally Back to Defeat Vikings in Overtime, 91-86

ROCHESTER, Mich. - Despite being down double-digits to the Cleveland State Vikings, the top-ranked team in the Horizon League standings heading today, the Golden Grizzlies prevailed 91-86 after a nail-biting overtime period.

Today's win marked Oakland head coach Greg Kampe's 132nd Horizon League win, setting the league record for most league victories. Doing so in just 12 seasons, Kampe surpassed Detroit Mercy's Perry Watson (1993-2008).

Allen Mukeba had a big night for the Golden Grizzlies (13-16, 10-8 HL), with Mukeba finishing with a double-double, notching 22 points and 12 rebounds. Meanwhile, Woodrich also had a night, nearly matching his career-high with 20 points.

Chase Robinson scored a team-high 18 points for Cleveland State (19-10, 13-5 HL) and tallied four assists. Je'Shawn Stevenson also had a solid game for the Vikings, finishing the game with 16 points and three steals.

Mukeba got the Golden Grizzlies on the scoreboard first. Despite drawing a double-team in the low post, Mukeba laid the ball off the glass and converted on Oakland's first possession. The Vikings responded with its own layup a few possessions later, as Reece Robinson picked up Cleveland State's first basket of the afternoon.

In the game's early stages, the Vikings quickly established an 8-2 lead, attacking the paint with force while forcing the Golden Grizzlies to take some tough shots. With a deficit to make up, Oakland trusted Buru Naivalurua and Mukeba to take high-percentage shots inside the paint.

Halfway through the first, the Cleveland State offense continued to get the best of Oakland, as the Vikings' lead grew to 22-13 due to a hyper-efficient offense that couldn't seem to miss, spearheaded by Chase Robinson.

As the first started to wind down, the Oakland offense caught fire, with Woodrich knocking down a trio of threes and Mukeba notching an and-one. With the Golden Grizzly offense off to the races, the team narrowed a once 13-point deficit to a four heading into halftime, 46-42.

At the break, the Golden Grizzlies shot at a .563 (14-for-27) rate from the field and a .500 (5-for-10) clip from beyond the arc. In comparison, the Vikings shot at a .563 (18-for-32) rate from the floor and a .429 (6-for-14) clip from deep. Additionally, the Golden Grizzlies held a slight advantage off the glass, outrebounding the Vikings 15-11.

With the second half underway, the Golden Grizzlies and the Vikings kept it an offensive battle. Cleveland State's Tevin Smith knocked down a three in the half's opening moments, and Mukeba brought the hammer down with a dunk, moving the crowd to their feet.

Around the 14-minute mark, Isaiah Jones drove to the lane before converting at the rim to give Oakland its first lead since the team opened the game with the first pair of points. Although the lead didn't stick for long, the Golden Grizzlies stayed on pace with the Vikings, keeping it a close game.

However, after Woodrich knocked down his fifth three of the game, the Golden Grizzlies solidified its place in the driver's seat, energizing the crowd in the process as the game continued. Down the stretch, with the Golden Grizzlies down two, Nassim Mashhour found Woodrich in the corner. Subsequently, Woodrich buried a three, his sixth of the night, to give Oakland the lead with a minute to go.

Still, Cleveland State's Je'Shawn Stevenson converted an and-one a possession later to move the needle back in favor of the Vikings. However, Mukeba responded on the next Oakland possession, finishing a tough layup at the rim to tie the game up, 77-77, as the Vikings' last shot didn't go, sending the game to overtime.

In the extra period, Oakland's plan to attack the paint paid off, as every Golden Grizzly point came from inside the line, ultimately lifting Oakland over Cleveland State.

The Golden Grizzlies finished the game shooting at a .459 (28-for-61) rate from the field while shooting at a .348 (8-for-23) clip from three. In comparison, the Vikings shot at a .446 (33-for-74) rate from the floor while converting at a .344 (11-for-32) clip from beyond the arc. The Golden Grizzlies also finished ahead in the rebound battle, outrebounding Cleveland State 47-32.
