Rice Sets Single-Season Steal Record as Golden Grizzlies Split at Bowling Green

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Golden Grizzlies split its two weekday games against the Bowling Green Falcons as it won its first game, 21-18, followed by a 19-8 loss, this afternoon on Steller Field.

The Golden Grizzlies (24-21, 12-9 HL) were led by Carter Hain and Gavin Arseneau as they both tacked on five RBI, while four Golden Grizzlies tacked on a trio of hits between the two games. On the mound, Sean Fekete earned the win during game one and led the team on the day in strikeouts.

The Falcons (25-15, 18-3 MAC) saw Jack Krause lead between the two games with seven RBI as Nathan Archer led game two with four hits.

GAME ONE, OAKLAND 21, BOWLING GREEN 18
The first game of the doubleheader started on the Oakland Baseball Field April 2, as play was suspended in between the sixth and seventh inning due to inclement weather and the field unsafe to play.

Back on the Oakland Baseball Field, the Falcons took a quick lead with a pair of runs but the Golden Grizzlies answered during its first at-bat in a big way. John Lauinger knotted things up with a single that brought Brandon Nigh and Trent Rice home, as Carter Hain answered with a double to put the Golden Grizzlies up a pair. Back-to-back walks juiced the bases, still in the first, as Gavin Arseneau hit a bases-clearing double, followed by a Rice double to explode for eight runs in the first.

The Falcons closed the gap slightly as it crossed one run across the plate, but the Golden Grizzlies kept up as Lucas Day hit a deep single to bring Nigh home, as Day eventually found home off a wild pitch to make it 10-3 after two. However, a home run, three doubles and a single accounted for eight runs for the Falcons as it went ahead, 11-10, before Day tallied another RBI with a sacrifice fly in the third to square things at 11.

The fourth inning calmed as neither team found home plate but picked right back up in the fifth as the Falcons went ahead by five, highlighted by a three-run home run. Once again, the Golden Grizzlies answered as Aidan Orr found the right field gap and sent in a pair of runs, followed by Sam Griffith who cut the deficit to one with a deep homer to left field. Reggie Bussey then doubled and eventually knotted things up as he crossed home from a wild pitch to make it 16-16.

Bowling Green, once again, went ahead by a run, but Gaskins tied things up at 17 with a double, as Orr brought him home as he sped from second to home off a single through the left side.

Play resumed nearly a month later on Steller Field as it wasn't long before the Falcons knotted things up with a single, but Oakland answered as Rice brought in a run, followed by a two-run shot by Day. Rice also set the all-time single-season record for most stolen bases in a season as he passed Mike Armstrong (1995) who had the record at 33.

The offense slowed after as the Golden Grizzlies held on and won, 21-18.

GAME TWO, BOWLING GREEN 19, OAKLAND 8 (7 Inn.)
The Falcons started quick as its leadoff batter took his first pitch for a home run to quickly go up, 1-0. The Golden Grizzlies answered though as Ben Clark singled and was brought home by a Arseneau home run to take the lead. Bussey was right behind with a RBI as his single brought in Liam Pollock. Oakland's lead was short lived though, as five runs were added to Bowling Green's total to push itself ahead, 6-3, after the first two innings of play.

The game continued to teeter back-and-forth as John Lauinger and Nigh got on base by a hit by pitch and walk, respectively, as Carter Hain brought the two home, along with himself, with a three-run shot to knot things at six. The Falcons took the lead once again as a RBI single was followed by a three-run home run to take a four-run lead. Bussey closed the gap to three as he brought Pollock home, but the Falcons added eight right after to take an 11-run lead.

The Falcons tacked on one more in the fifth prior to Arseneau scoring on a wild pitch, but the Falcons held on as it run ruled the Golden Grizzlies in seven innings, 19-8.

The Golden Grizzlies return home this weekend for a crucial three-game series against Wright State, with first pitch set for Friday (May 3) at 3:30 p.m. ET.
