Golden Grizzlies Look to Continue Metro Series Dominance as the Titans Visit Rochester

ROCHESTER, Mich. - The Golden Grizzlies continue to keep their momentum swinging as they ready up for an early-season rivalry matchup against Detroit Mercy.

The Golden Grizzlies most recently won two out of three games against Youngstown State in their home-opening series.

Oakland saw big-time performances on both sides of the field in the series. Maci Brown came through to secure the Golden Grizzlies' first win on their home field as she earned her first walk-off hit of her career with a game-sealing RBI single in a 5-4 win on Friday. After a tough loss in game one of a Saturday double-header, Oakland powered to an emphatic win in the series finale behind a shutout by Sydney Campbell in a 3-0 victory.

In the series-ending win Taylor Carraway went 1-of-3 from the plate, knocking in two runs with an RBI double. Carraway has been on a tear as of late, riding a now eight game hitting streak and boosting her batting average of .314, the second highest on the team. Freshman Brooklyn Plitz has also stepped into a leadoff hitting role and thrived in it, going 4-of-11 (.364) in the three-game series, including a pair of two hit games and is now hitting .286.

With timely and consistent hitting now prevalent throughout the lineup, Oakland is catching a good early season groove, having won all three of their Horizon League series two games to one.

Against Horizon League opponents, Oakland has the second lowest ERA (2.07) and has thrown two shutouts, both courtesy of Campbell, despite having played the second least amount of league games in the conference.

The Golden Grizzlies will have a little extra motivation for their next series, taking on their in-state rivals.

Oakland has twice as many wins as the Titans all-time in the Metro Series, holding a 26-13 head-to-head record, with a 13-4 record at home in the series. The Golden Grizzlies have won six straight games against Detroit and haven't lost at home since April of 2016. In their last matchup (4/12/23) Oakland earned an 8-2 win in a homer-heavy affair as Allisa DiPrima, Madi Herrington, Mia Konyvka, Reese Ruhlman, Jenna Johnston, and Jen Krizka all homered as the Golden Grizzlies hit five balls out the park in Detroit along with 12 hits. Four Oakland players went for multiple hits in the game.

While the game might not see as many home runs not being at Buysse Ballpark, but Oakland averages 4.92 runs all-time against the Titans which means a high-scoring game may be in play for Oakland, especially with Detroit's league-worst 7.59 ERA and 1.88 batting average.

SCOUTING THE TITANS

Detroit Mercy has struggled to start the season, holding a 1-25 overall record and being still without a win in league play (0-6). They are currently riding a 13-game losing streak, most recently losing 10-2 to IUPUI on Apr. 7.

The Titans are looking for a stepping stone of improvement and have bright spots in the lineup. Sophomore catcher Trinity Fessler leads the team in batting average (.277) and can be very dangerous at the plate, having three games of three or more hits this season, including a 3-of-3 game against IUPUI on Apr.6.

The Golden Grizzlies and Titans meet for the 40th time in history, beginning on Tuesday, Apr. 9 at 12 p.m., followed by a double-header on Wednesday, Apr. 10 starting at 1 p.m.
