Golden Grizzlies Look to Extend Winning Streak to Five as they Host IUPUI

ROCHESTER, Mich. - The Golden Grizzlies return to the Oakland Softball Field for a quick midweek double header against IUPUI.

In their last series the Golden Grizzlies earned their first sweep of the season, tallying three victories over Green Bay, outscoring the Phoenix 20 to six in the games.

Sydney Campbell continued to tear through the competition, earning two wins, allowing just two runs and two walks while tossing six strikeouts in her starts. Campbell now owns the lowest ERA in the Horizon League at 1.54, helping Oakland's team ERA also be the best at 2.77.

Where Oakland has made the biggest jump is at the plate, where after a rough start to the season the Golden Grizzlies have batted over .350 in four of their last six games, including three of those reaching over .410 as a team. The Golden Grizzlies are now the fourth best hitting team in the Horizon League with a .267 batting average. In conference games, Oakland is hitting .303 and has a .373 on base percentage,  both third best in the league, and has a league low 1.63 ERA as they climb the standings and now sit in second place.

Individually several Golden Grizzlies have found their rhythm in the batter's box, with five players on at least a four game hit streak. Brooklyn Plitz went 5-of-12 with a home run and four RBI in the series against the Phoenix, extending her hit streak to seven games as she bats .364, sixth best in the league. In conference games, the star freshman is hitting a scorching .438. Kamryn Troyer is hitting her stride, hitting .290 on the season as she went 5-of-11 against the Phoenix, riding a six game hit streak. Maci Brown has also been on a tear, currently on a six game hitting run. Reese Ruhlman and Madi Herrington also have been reliable, recording hits in four straight games. With seven of their full time starters batting over .265 on the season, Oakland has become the two-headed monster at the plate and in the field that they have worked hard to become over the course of the season.

They hope to keep the pressure on against their upcoming opponent in the Jags. Oakland holds the all-time advantage 34-21, though the recent matchups have been much more even with Oakland holding a 6-4 record in the last 10 matchups. Their last showdown came in Indianapolis where IUPUI squeaked out a 6-5 victory on March 21, 2023.

SCOUTING THE JAGS

IUPUI holds a 10-30 record coming into the game, with a 6-9 mark in league play. They most recently lost a pair of games to Purdue Fort Wayne in their latest series, sitting them in the six spot among conference teams.

Despite their up and down season, the Jags are one of the top teams at the plate with the third best batting average in the Horizon League (.273). They are second in runs scored (146) and hits (286). They have four players hitting over .500, including Kendal Calvert who is hitting a league-best .420, along with outfielder Kate McPhearson (.320), infielder Kennedy Cowan (.378), and infielder Megan Gilbert (.333).
IUPUI's poise at the plate against a streaking Oakland team is primed for a pair of high-class showdowns, beginning at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Apr. 17.
