Townsend Named #HLMBB Player of the Year, Gohlke Named Sixth Man of the Year; Lampman Earns All-League Honors

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Three Oakland University men's basketball student-athletes garnered #HLMBB All-League honors as Trey Townsend was named Player of the Year and named first-team, Jack Gohlke named Sixth Man of the Year, while Blake Lampman garnered second-team honors, the league office announced today.

Townsend becomes the sixth Golden Grizzly in 15 years to earn Player of the Year honors and first since Jamal Cain was named Co-Player of the Year in 2022. Townsend is now the fourth Oakland player to earn the award since joining the Horizon League in 2013, as he joins Cain, Kendrick Nunn and Kay Felder, all of whom have played in the NBA. Also with a first-team nod, Oakland has now had a player earn First Team All-League honors for 18-straight years.

Townsend helped lead the Golden Grizzlies to its first outright Horizon League Regular Season Title since joining the league and second regular season title as it grabbed a share in 2017. The senior finished the regular season leading the team with 16.6 points per game as he shot at a .459 clip from the floor. Townsend has played and started in all 31 games this season and leads Oakland off the glass with 236 total rebounds, good for 7.6 a game, and has nearly eclipsed the 100-assist mark with a team-high 93. He also holds the team lead in steals with 39 and free throws made with 136, good for a .795 clip from the charity stripe.

League wide, the forward sits sixth overall in points per game and has scored the fourth-most points. His 7.6 rebounds per game is good for fourth in the league and first among the five players in front of him in scoring, while he has grabbed the third most rebounds with his 236. In conference play, Townsend sits third overall with 5.8 rebounds per game and third in total rebounds with 156. He also finds himself in the top ten in total assists and in assist/turnover ratio. The Oxford, Mich., native is t-1st in the league in average time on the floor with 35.8 per game, third in free throws made and seventh in field goals made.

This season, Townsend was named Horizon League Player of the Week (Jan. 8) and has scored double-digit points on 28 of Oakland's 31 games. In those 28 games, the Golden Grizzlies are 18-10, as he's also led the team off the glass in 17 games as he's 10-7 in those games. Named to the Lou Henson Award Mid-Season Watch List, he's recorded seven double-doubles on the season to total his 18 overall, good for eighth in the Golden Grizzlies all-time record book. Also named Horizon League First-Team All-Academic, Townsend tied his career-high in rebounds (17) and set new career-highs in free throws made (14) and free throws attempted (17) and continues to climb in the Golden Grizzlies all-time record book in games started (third) and minutes played (fourth), along with offensive (seventh), defensive (fourth) and total (eighth) rebounds.

Jack Gohlke became the second Golden Grizzly to earn Horizon League Sixth Man of the Year as Max Hooper earned the award in 2016, the same year Felder earned Player of the Year.

The Hillsdale College transfer has played a pivotal role with the Golden Grizzlies and has come off the bench every game, besides senior night (March 2 vs. UDM), since Dec. 31. In that span, he averaged 12.8 points per game and 3.5 boards per game, while shooting at a .414 clip from range after he sank 58. In his time coming off the bench, the graduate student scored in the double figures nine times and tallied 20+ points four times. Overall amongst the team, Gohlke sits third in points per game with 12.0 and hits at a .361 clip from range, good for second on the team.

This season, Gohlke tied his career-high in points (31), field goals made (10) and three-point field goals made (10), while he set a new best in field goal attempts and three-point field goal attempts (20), along with free throws made (7) and attempted (8), all of which were career bests at the Division I level. Gohlke made his Oakland debut known as he led the team in points in his first Division I game in a tight-knit loss against Big Ten Ohio State.

Lethal from three, Gohlke has only taken three shots inside the arc as he started the season with 57-straight shots from three and made at least one three in the first 16 games of the season with only three games without a three made all year. Currently, Gohlke is second in the NCAA in total three-pointers made with 107, second in attempts with 296 and third in the nation in three-pointers made per game with 3.45.

In the Horizon League, Gohlke, although playing off the bench, ranks in the top-25 in points per game and is third overall in three-point field goal percentage both overall and in league play. He also sits alone at the top in three-point field goals made overall and is second in league play with 3.4 makes per game. The Pewaukee, Wis., native has led the Golden Grizzlies five separate times as Oakland is 4-1 in those games, as the team is 14-4 when Gohlke records a double-digit point night.

Gohlke was named Horizon League Player of the Week (Feb. 19) after he tallied 54 points, all off the bench, in a pair of wins for the Golden Grizzlies. He was lights out against IUPUI (Feb. 17) as he went 10-of-15 (.667) from range, good for t-2nd in the Golden Grizzlies record book for most threes in a game. He only saw 24:02 minutes of court time and matched his career-high in points, field goals made and three-point field goals made.

Also on the season, Gohlke tallied his 1000th career point on a three in a double overtime win against Milwaukee to help lead the Golden Grizzlies to become the first Horizon League team to win in the state of Wisconsin. In the win, he scored 27 points off eight threes and hit the go-ahead shot in regulation and the first overtime to tie the game.

Blake Lampman was named to the Horizon League All-Conference Second Team after the graduate student played the first two games of the season, but missed the next seven due to injury. His comeback didn't go unnoticed as he sank his first shot from range after the month off and kept it rolling from there. Lampman has played in all but one game since his return and is second overall on the team in scoring with 13.8 points per game and assists with 73. He also sits first in three-point percentage as he hits at a .385 clip and second in total three-pointers made with 79.

In the league, Lampman sits around the top in conference play with 15.6 points per game. The Haslett, Mich., native sits second in three-point field goal percentage (.398) and first in three-pointers made per game with 3.8, all in league play. He's hit the second most threes (64) in conference play with three less games played than everyone in the top five and sits in the top-10 in assists per game with 3.5.

The graduate student recorded a career-high in points (26), field goals made (8) and three-pointers made (7) this season as he matched his point total three total times this season. Along the lines of setting career bests, he set a new high in rebounds (6), assists (9), field goal attempts (19) and three-point field goal attempts (18).

Lampman was named Horizon League First Team All-Academic and has been named all-academic all four years eligible. He holds a winning record when he's the Golden Grizzlies leading scorer while the Golden Grizzlies are 9-7 in games he's in the double figures in points. Lampman also tallied his 1000th career point in a win this season and has climbed in the Oakland overall record book.

The guard played his 138th game as a Golden Grizzly which put him atop the record book for most games played as he surpassed Travis Bader and Will Hudson. The graduate student also sits in the fifth spot career wise in three-point field goals made with 272 and fourth in attempts with 811.

Lampman earned Horizon League Player of the Week (Feb. 5) for the first time in his career after he was the top producer for Oakland after a 2-0 week which placed Oakland first in the league standings. Lampman finished with 52 points as he grabbed 26 points in back-to-back games which tied a career-high he set earlier this season. The graduate student shot 17-of-32 (.531) from the field while going 12-of-24 (.500) from deep and was a perfect 6-of-6 from the charity stripe and tallied seven rebounds.

Townsend, Gohlke, Lampman and all of the Golden Grizzlies embark on its journey in the Horizon League Championship Tournament as it opens up play Thursday in the quarterfinal game.
