Golden Grizzlies Seek Sixth-Straight Home Win with Matchup Versus Vikings

ROCHESTER, Mich. - The Golden Grizzlies men's basketball team hits the floor for its second-straight home game and will look to build off Thursday's win as Cleveland State visits the blacktop Saturday (Feb. 3), with tip-off set for 1:00 p.m. ET.

The Golden Grizzlies (14-9, 9-3 HL) took care of business against Robert Morris, 87-72, as the team has won seven of its last eight games and hasn't lost at home since Dec. 6.

Robert Morris grabbed the first points of the game, but Blake Lampman came out hot early as he went on to score the team's first 12 points, all from beyond the arc, to put Oakland ahead early. Oakland wouldn't look behind from then as it went on to lead for the remainder of the contest.

DQ Cole grew the Golden Grizzlies lead to double digits as Jack Gohlke intercepted a pass and fed it to Cole on the fast break. The Colonials started to close the gap as a quick five points made it 29-23, but Cole found his spot from range and drilled a three, followed by a wide-open dunk from Trey Townsend after a Tuburu Naivalurua steal, to put the Golden Grizzlies up by 11 once again.

Lampman continued to be lethal as he drained yet another three for his 20th point of the half as Oakland was rolling both offensively and defensively. The Golden Grizzlies held the Colonials scoreless for nearly four minutes as it took advantage and rattled off 11-straight points to widen its lead to 40-23. Robert Morris went on to score seven-straight to end the half as Oakland held on to a 10-point lead after 20, 40-30.

Although Oakland's lead grew to as much as 20 with 13:40 left to play, Robert Morris battled back and went on a 12-0 run to put itself back into the game at 59-51. Rocket Watts put a halt to the run as he crossed up his defender and nailed one from downtown. The Colonials continued to inch closer in the score but Gohlke tabbed his third three of the contest to make it 67-57 Oakland with 7:14 to go.

Lampman tied his career-high in field goals made (eight), along with three pointers made (seven) as he hit from range to push the team's lead to 11. Lampman went on to tie his career-high in points (26) and also set a new three-point career high as he sank another from deep. Oakland started to run away with it as Cole made one from three, followed by three-straight from the charity stripe for the team to make it 79-64 Oakland.

The lead grew to 15 with 2:40 to go, Robert Morris hung around as time was winding down to force Oakland to make its free throws. The Colonials hung around an 11-point deficit, but the lead was too much as Oakland iced the game with free throws and controlled the final minutes for the win, 87-72.

The Golden Grizzlies were led by Lampman who set a new career-high in three pointers made with eight as he finished with 26 points, while Naivalurua led the team off the glass with eight boards. Gohlke followed up his performance against Milwaukee with another high-scoring effort as he went 4-of-8 from the field for 19 points.

Oakland was lights out from the floor in the second half as it shot 15-of-24 (.625) from the floor to increase its overall percentage to 52.7%. The team added eight threes in the final 20 as it totaled 15, while Robert Morris added four for a total of eight. The teams tied off the glass as both teams totaled 35, as Oakland held the edge on the defensive side with 27.

SCOUTING THE VIKINGS
Cleveland State (14-9, 7-5 HL) got the better half of Oakland in its initial meeting this season (L, 77-75, Dec. 28) as the team sits T-4th in the Horizon League standings. Since the meeting in December, the team has rattled off five wins and four losses in Horizon League play, primarily going back-and-forth with two-straight losses in Wisconsin, and currently ride a two-game win streak. That span includes two overtime games while the Vikings, on average, get outscored by its opposition, 79.4-78.3.

The December game between these two came on the road for Oakland and was its last loss before it won six-straight games. In the 75-67 loss, Chris Conway led the team with 14 points while Townsend recorded a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds.

The Golden Grizzlies saw its deficit grow to as much as 23 in the first half before it tacked on a run at the end of the half that followed into the second half to cut the deficit to 12. The Golden Grizzlies worked itself back into the game, but the Vikings matched its play as it didn't give up its lead since it was 5-5 at the 13:55 mark of the first. With 4:52 left in the game, Isaiah Jones inched close to take the lead and cut it down to four, but the Vikings answered with a three and stayed ahead to eventually win, 75-67.

The teams are an even 5-5 in its last 10 matchups as Oakland haven't lost to the Vikings at home since 2021 (L, 78-80). The Vikings struggle on the road, as it posts a record of 3-8 on the road, while the Golden Grizzlies have only lost one Horizon League game this season on its home court.

Cleveland State is led by two-time Horizon League Player of the Week Tristan Enaruna who averages 18.9 points per game and also leads the team off the glass with 6.5 boards per game. The forward shoots an even .500 clip from the field and has added 19 from three.
