ROCHESTER, Mich. - The Golden Grizzlies men's basketball team will look to end the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic on a high note as it'll take on host Hawai'i in the third-place game Wednesday, with tip-off set for 6:30 p.m. ET.
The Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic, which takes place inside SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center in Honolulu, Hawaii, is a bracket-style tournament consisting of eight teams. Those teams include: Oakland, Loyola Chicago, Oregon State, Charleston, Nebraska, Murray State, Charlotte and Hawai'i. The tournament will take place Dec. 22-25 and all Oakland games will be streamed live on ESPN2 along with all Oakland games live streamed through audio via 91.1HD-3, The Bet1270 AM (WXYT-AM) and the Audacy App with Neal Ruhl on the call. Â
The Golden Grizzlies (4-8, 1-2 HL) opened the game strong, leading by as much as seven, before a back-and-forth battle ended the half in a tie at 34 even. Oakland built a 10-point lead with under six minutes left in the second half but Oregon State forced a 68-68 tie, sending the game to overtime after Oakland missed a final regulation attempt. Oakland took an early lead but struggled offensively down the stretch. The Beavers surged late, with a jumper and free throws sealing the game as Oakland fell, 80-74.
Following a record-setting performance from
Allen Mukeba, who became the third Golden Grizzly to shoot perfect from the field with at least 10 attempts (10-of-10), he enters the game as the team's leading scorer, averaging 13.9 points per game.
DQ Cole is behind him with 12.2 points per game, as
Buru Naivalurua averages 11.2 points with a team-high 7.8 rebounds per game. As a team, Oakland scores 64.4 points per game off a .415 mark from the field, as it narrowly gets beat off the glass with a -0.9 margin with its 34.5 rebounds per game.

The Rainbow Warriors (7-4, 0-1 MWC) enter the third-place game after a loss to Nebraska, 69-55, following its tournament-opening win against Charlotte, 78-61. Prior to the tournament, Hawai'i lost three of its last five, including its sole conference game to Long Beach State, as it also fell to Power-4 North Carolina, 87-69. The Golden Grizzlies are the first and only Horizon League school the Rainbow Warriors will face this season.
Wednesday's game marks the first time the Golden Grizzlies will face the Rainbow Warriors.
Hawai'i has a trio of players record double-digit points as Gytis Nemeiksa leads with 13.7 points per game, shooting .536 (52-of-97) from the floor. Tanner Christensen, who averaged 10.7 points per game, leads the team with 7.3 rebounds per game and is one of two Rainbow Warriors who has started in all 11 games. From beyond the arc, Kody Williams leads the team as he's made 18 of his 36 attempts.
The Rainbow Warriors average 73.2 points per game off a .474 mark from the floor with 7.1 threes per game, while it allows 69.1 points per game off a .435 clip and just 5.5 threes allowed per game. Hawai'i wins the battle off the glass by a margin of 8.0 as it brings down 35.5 rebounds per game, while it dishes out 11.4 assists per game. The Rainbow Warriors, however, turn the ball over 12.5 times per game, 3.3 times more than its opposition.
