ROCHESTER, Mich. - Oakland Athletics and the men's basketball team will honor former standout player Kay Felder Thursday, Feb. 6, at halftime of the Golden Grizzlies' game against Youngstown State with the unveiling of his No. 20 banner.
Felder becomes the sixth Oakland men's basketball player to get his number 'put up in the rafters' of the OU Credit Union O'rena as he joins Scott Bittinger, Rawle Marshall, Travis Bader, Keith Benson and Kendrick Nunn.
The Detroit, Mich., native donned the black and gold for three seasons, from 2013-16, and left his mark on the program. During his final season with the Golden Grizzlies, Felder was a 2016 Associated Press All-American Third Team selection, a Sporting News and NABC All-American Third Team honoree, was named Horizon League Player of the Year on top of being named all-league first team, and was a finalist for the John R. Wooden Award and the Bob Cousy Award. Furthermore, he was named to the NABC All-District First Team for the second team in a row along with USBWA All-District recognition. On the season, Felder nearly averaged double-digit assists as he led the whole NCAA with 9.3 per game, and ranked fourth in the nation with 24.4 points per game.
Over his three-year career with Oakland, Felder played and started in all 101 games and averaged 17.5 points per game, shooting at a career-mark .426 from the field with a .345 clip from range. In the Oakland career record book, Felder ranks in the top-10 in nine different categories, five of which he's in the top-five. With 788 career assists, Felder ranks third all time in the books to go along with his 7.8 assists per game, good for second all-time, as he's also the only Golden Grizzly to have a pair of triple-doubles. Felder also ranked in the top-10 in the NCAA all three years with the program in assists per game.
For a single season, Felder finds himself in the top-10 on 12 occasions and in the top-five in seven categories, as he ranks third in points (773), fifth in field goal attempts (554), second in free throws (219), fourth in free throw attempts (256), third in assists (296) and assists per game (9.25) and fourth in double-doubles (17), all of which came in the 2015-16 season. Felder also broke the Horizon League career and single-season assists records.
Felder became just the second Golden Grizzly to be selected in the NBA Draft as the Atlanta Hawks picked him up in the second round before his rights were traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers.
The guard played three seasons in the NBA and appeared in 58 games which spanned from the Cavaliers, the Detroit Piston and the Chicago Bulls. He saw the floor in more than half of the contests his rookie year. Felder finished the season with 4.0 points per game in 9.2 minutes per game.
After 2018, Felder continued his career overseas with the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA) where he's played from 2019 to now. Following the 2021-22 season, Felder was named the CBA International MVP after he averaged a double-double on the year with 24.7 points per game and 10.0 assists per game.
