Battle-Hungry Golden Grizzlies Ready for Rematch with Wolverines

ROCHESTER, Mich. – On Wednesday, Oakland University Softball will conclude the non-conference portion of its regular season with the University of Michigan at 6:00 pm on Big Ten Plus at Carol Hutchins Stadium.

Oakland took the three-game #HLSB series against Robert Morris University last Thursday and Friday, the rubber match of which went a dramatic eight innings as the team advanced to 16-17 overall, 12-6 in Horizon League play.

Reese Ruhlman takes the top batting average on the team at .326 with her third home run of the season coming in the Robert Morris series last weekend. Jen Krizka is at the top of the leaderboard for the Golden Grizzlies in terms of RBI and home runs with 24 and six, respectively.

Maci Brown and Allisa DiPrima put up .308 and .297 batting averages with Ruhlman's OPS standing at 1.075, on top of the Horizon League along with Krizka who posts a 1.059.

Krizka, coupled with Leah Bieniewicz and Madi Herrington, string together a solid group of hitters with averages of .289, .274, and .241, respectively.

The freshman duo of Kamryn Troyer and Jenna Johnston has been a welcomed addition to the lineup with the former of the two riding a five-game hitting streak, the longest of any Golden Grizzly currently. Bieniewicz held an 11-game streak which was broken in game two of last Thursday's double header with RMU.

Ruhlman has, unfortunately, been struck by a total of 13 pitches on the year putting the senior fourth in the entirety of NCAA Division I in hit by pitch per game at .39 a contest. As a team, the Golden Grizzlies are tenth overall in the country.

Right-handed pitcher Sydney Campbell earned her second-straight Nike #HLTF Pitcher of the Week honor off her one earned run, third-shutout, 2-0 performance last week against Robert Morris in Moon Township, Pennsylvania.

The redshirt junior has an overall earned run average of 2.04, 1.05 in conference play to lead the league heading into the final regular season week of play with only 32 earned runs in 551 at-bats she's thrown to.

Ruhlman also sits 19th in the NCAA in triples per game with .12 while Maci Brown also makes an appearance in the top 50 with .10. OU is still fourth as a team in the country in triples per game with .45.

Oakland is currently first in the Horizon League standings at 12-6 in league play ahead of Northern Kentucky in second at 12-7.

SCOUTING REPORT

THE WOLVERINES

U of M will be coming off a Tuesday single game with Western Michigan in Ann Arbor fresh from a sweep by Indiana. Since the Golden Grizzlies and Wolverines' last meeting on March 29, the maize and blue have posted a 9-8 record to move to 10-10 in Big Ten play.

Lexie Blair leads the team with a .346 batting average and a team-high 14 doubles to her credit while Indiana Langford is just behind as the only other Wolverine with an average above .300 with .321. Keke McVey has brought in a staggering 41 RBI to this point in the season.

Lauren Derkowski posts a 17-10 record with a 1.94 ERA, including 199 strikeouts in 649 batters faced plus the 49 earned runs allowed. Jessica LeBau has appeared a few times this season for a 7-11 mark entering Wednesday.

As previously mentioned, Michigan will host Western Michigan on Tuesday night.

BACK-TO-BACK POTW
Campbell earned back-to-back Nike #HLSB Pitcher of the Week awards on April 25 and May 2 with a 4-0 combined record from each honor with only two earned runs.

SYD JUST WINS, WINS, WINS
Redshirt junior pitcher, Sydney Campbell, secured her 49th career win in the circle for Oakland on March 22 in the first half of a doubleheader with IUPUI. Campbell bests Jessica Granger's record set from 2007-2009.

PICKED FIRST… AGAIN!
The Golden Grizzlies are slated to be first in the Horizon League for the 2023 season as voted on by the conference's Head Coaches back on February 8 with eight of the nine first-place votes.

STARTING AT 100
Head Coach Lauren Karn will start the 2023 campaign with 100 wins in her pocket as the all-time winningest head coach in Oakland Softball history. Prior to THE Spring Games on February 24, Karn sits at 100-104 in her five-year career.

A STORM IN THE CIRCLE
Pitcher Sydney Campbell returns to play as the reigning #HLSB Pitcher of the Year following a 2.23 earned run average with only 204 hits allowed in 864 at-bats the La Grange, Ohio native has faced. Campbell's name is littered through the OU record book as she's first in-season appearances (43) and season wins (23).

NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK
Six freshmen join the Oakland roster in Jenna Johnston, Kayla Rodriguez, Maraina Smith, Taylor Carraway, Hailee Jenkins, and Kamryn Troyer
