Oakland and Green Bay to Meet in #HLSB Quarterfinals

ROCHESTER, Mich. – Oakland University Softball will open the quarterfinals of the 2023 #HLSB Tournament at King Park in Green Bay, Wisconsin against No. # seed (TEAM) at 1:00 pm ET on ESPN+.

Last time out, Oakland won the series against Purdue Fort Wayne on their home diamond last weekend to move to 18-19 overall, 14-7 in #HLSB play. With the two wins and a Northern Kentucky series loss to Youngstown State, the Golden Grizzlies clinched the regular season title in the conference.

Recently, four Golden Grizzly student-athletes along with Head Coach Lauren Karn earned Pitcher of the Year (Sydney Campbell), All-League First Team (Campbell, Maci Brown, Reese Ruhlman), All-League Second Team (Jen Krizka), and Coach of the Year (Karn).

This is Campbell and Karn's second-straight single individual honor along with the Golden Grizzlies' second-straight #HLSB Regular Season title with the No. 1 seed.

Campell capped off the regular season with a 1.91 earned run average, 0.99 in conference play, with only 33 earned runs in 605 at-bats throughout the 155.0 innings the redshirt junior has pitched in.

The LaGrange, Ohio native is 13th in NCAA Division I in strikeout-to-walk ratio at 6.92, tossing 90 strikeouts to 13 walks.

Ruhlman and Brown bat above .300 apiece with averages of .323 and .310, respectively. Krizka has a team-high 26 runs batted in just ahead of Ruhlman at 20 and Allisa DiPrima at 18. Brown has a team-best five triples while Ruhlman has posted eight doubles.

As a team, the Golden Grizzlies are third in NCAA Division I in triples per game at .51 while Brown is eighth individual with the Rochester, Indiana native averaging .14 a contest. Krizka and Ruhlman also see their names among the top 50 at 27th and 30th, respectively.

Oakland has dropped to 14th in hit batters while Ruhlman hovers at seventh in hit-by-pitch per game in the country.

The freshman group of Jenna Johnston, Kamryn Troyer, and Taylor Carraway have been a welcomed addition to the lineup for the Golden Grizzlies with 16 RBI at the closing part of the order.

This is the second straight time Oakland has been the No. 1 seed entering the conference tournament, downing Green Bay, Northern Kentucky, and Robert Morris in the 2022 edition for the tournament championship.

SCOUTING REPORT

NO. 5 GREEN BAY

With the bases loaded in the top of the seventh, IUPUI threw ball four to the Phoenix batter to bring the winning run across for the 2-1 edge as the host institution continued to pile on runs for the 5-1 win at King Park.

Leadoff batter Tiffany Giese leads the Phoenix with the best batting average of the team at .344. The #HLSB Player of the Year leads Jadin Justman and Paige Hanson with averages of .313 and .305. Justman has totaled 15 doubles while Samantha Saloun has batted in 33 runs.

Brittany Baneck finished Wednesday's first game with the win and the team's best ERA at 2.59, leading the rotation of Paeton Kringel and Kelly Greene at 3.95 and 5.80.

The last time these two teams met was in Rochester from April 7-8 where the Golden Grizzlies took the series 2-1.

BACK-TO-BACK POTW
Campbell earned back-to-back Nike #HLSB Pitcher of the Week awards on April 25 and May 2 with a 4-0 combined record from each honor with only two earned runs.

SYD JUST WINS, WINS, WINS
Redshirt junior pitcher, Sydney Campbell, secured her 49th career win in the circle for Oakland on March 22 in the first half of a doubleheader with IUPUI. Campbell bests Jessica Granger's record set from 2007-2009.

PICKED FIRST… AGAIN!
The Golden Grizzlies are slated to be first in the Horizon League for the 2023 season as voted on by the conference's Head Coaches back on February 8 with eight of the nine first-place votes.

STARTING AT 100
Head Coach Lauren Karn will start the 2023 campaign with 100 wins in her pocket as the all-time winningest head coach in Oakland Softball history. Prior to THE Spring Games on February 24, Karn sits at 100-104 in her five-year career.

A STORM IN THE CIRCLE
Pitcher Sydney Campbell returns to play as the reigning #HLSB Pitcher of the Year following a 2.23 earned run average with only 204 hits allowed in 864 at-bats the La Grange, Ohio native has faced. Campbell's name is littered through the OU record book as she's first in-season appearances (43) and season wins (23).

NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK
Six freshmen join the Oakland roster in Jenna Johnston, Kayla Rodriguez, Maraina Smith, Taylor Carraway, Hailee Jenkins, and Kamryn Troyer
