A Return to #HLSB Play Headlines Softball Weekend

ROCHESTER, Mich. – Another #HLSB series for Oakland University Softball is on tap for a doubleheader April 2 in Youngstown, Ohio at the YSU Softball Complex against the Penguins of Youngstown State. 

Oakland and Northern Kentucky split last weekend's doubleheader in Rochester with the Golden Grizzlies coming out victorious in game one 3-1, falling in game two 8-1. OU then took to the diamond on Wednesday against Michigan in a five-inning loss 9-0. 

Allisa DiPrima still leads the Golden Grizzlies with a .391 putting the White Lake native second in the Horizon League. DiPrima along with Reese Ruhlman rank in a tie for 28th in NCAA Division I in triples per game with the pair hitting .13 a game. 

As a squad, the Golden Grizzlies are tied for fourth along with Boston University in triples per game with .47. 

Ruhlman has the ninth-best hitting average in #HLSB at .317 with two doubles and two triples to her credit. Jen Krizka finds herself fifth on the conference's leaderboard at .353 with five doubles putting her in a tie for 27th nationally in doubles per game. The Joliet, Illinois native is also 22nd in walks per game in the country. 

In her 44 at-bats, Madi Herrington continues to become one of the toughest strikeouts in Division I, leaping up to fifth with only one K in the season stats. Herrington is among company from Oklahoma, Marshall, and Boston while leading notable hitters from Utah, Pittsburgh, Washington, etc. 

Leah Bieniewicz and Maci Brown combine for sixth and 23rd in NCAA Division I in sacrifice hits per game at .29 and .23, respectively, as a key components of advancing base runners for OU.

In the circle, Sydney Campbell has the second-best earned run average of the Horizon League of 2.06 allowing 17 earned runs in 57.2 innings pitched. Campbell has thrown 35 strikeouts this season, paired with five walks for the 24th-best strikeout-to-walk ratio in America. 

SCOUTING REPORT

THE PENGUINS

At 14-15 overall, the Penguins split their doubleheader with St. Bonaventure on Wednesday at the YSU Softball Complex in an 8-0 five-inning rout followed by a 4-2 loss the following game. Youngstown State has started out 4-1 in league play with a series sweep of Purdue Fort Wayne and a single loss in the three-game stand versus Detroit Mercy.

Sara Fessler leads the entire league in batting average at .392 with 31 hits in 79 at-bats with seven home runs and seven RBI. Hailey Roach and Conchetta Rinaldi sit just behind at .286 and .267, respectively as the latter of the two posts a league-leading 20 RBI.

Devan Ryan now has the best ERA in the conference at 1.99 while Bree Kohler has the fourth-best mark at 2.65. The depth of pitching grows for YSU with Sophie Howell at 2.90. Ryan has seen 19 earned runs in 266 at-bats with 52 strikeouts while Howell has posted the Horizon League's most strikeouts at 91.

Oakland picked up a crucial doubleheader sweep of the Penguins in the two's last meeting on April 26, 2022. 

 

SYD JUST WINS, WINS, WINS
Redshirt junior pitcher, Sydney Campbell, secured her 49th career win in the circle for Oakland on March 22 in the first half of a doubleheader with IUPUI. Campbell bests Jessica Granger's record set from 2007-2009.

PICKED FIRST… AGAIN!
The Golden Grizzlies are slated to be first in the Horizon League for the 2023 season as voted on by the conference's Head Coaches back on February 8 with eight of the nine first-place votes.

STARTING AT 100
Head Coach Lauren Karn will start the 2023 campaign with 100 wins in her pocket as the all-time winningest head coach in Oakland Softball history. Prior to THE Spring Games on February 24, Karn sits at 100-104 in her five-year career. 

A STORM IN THE CIRCLE
Pitcher Sydney Campbell returns to play as the reigning #HLSB Pitcher of the Year following a 2.23 earned run average with only 204 hits allowed in 864 at-bats the La Grange, Ohio native has faced. Campbell's name is littered through the OU record book as she's first in-season appearances (43) and season wins (23).
