Non-Conference, B1G Opponent in Sight for Oakland

ROCHESTER, Mich. – Oakland University returns to non-conference action in Ann Arbor, Michigan on Wednesday, March 29 at 4:30 pm to battle the Wolverines at the Wilpon Baseball and Softball Complex.

The Golden Grizzlies split the latest #HLSB doubleheader with Northern Kentucky on Friday to move to 2-2 in league play on the season while staring down a showdown with Youngstown State this weekend following Wednesday's action.

Allisa DiPrima leads the conference in batting average at .409 with 18 hits in 44 at-bats. DiPrima, along with Reese Ruhlman, are tied for 21st in NCAA Division I with .14 per game. Ruhlman is seventh in #HLSB in batting average, posting a .325. 

Jen Krizka is tied for 20th in the nation in doubles per game (.38), 16th in on-base percentage (.533), and tied for 27th in walks per game (.77). The catcher is also good for .375 batting average with a team-high five doubles and the Golden Grizzlies' only home run of the year.

In the circle, Sydney Campbell is 49th in the NCAA, first in the league, in earned run average with a 1.51 plus the 33rd best strikeout to walk ratio in the entire division with 6.60. The LaGrange, Ohio native is 5-3 on the year with 12 earned runs in 223 batters faced.

Madi Herrington steps into Ann Arbor as the sixth toughest batter to strike out in the country, only striking out once on the year in 43 at-bats with 10 hits and a .233 batting average. 

Leah Bieniewicz and Maci Brown advance base runners well for Oakland, having the sixth and 13th best mark in the NCAA in sacrifice hits per game. 

As a team, the squad is still fourth in the country in triples per game at .50 with seven through 14 games with teams like UC Santa Barbara, Northern Illinois, and Wichita State in front of them.

Oakland also sees themselves in a tie for 12th in NCAA Division I defensively in double plays per game at .50 with Texas State, UNC Greensboro, and Big Ten opponent Wisconsin.

SCOUTING REPORT

THE WOLVERINES

Michigan enters Wednesday's contest 14-13 following a three-game slate against Ohio State in which the Wolverines tallied a 10-inning win and two losses as the series wrapped up Monday. 

Two Wolverines sit above 300 in batting average with Lexie Blair and Ellie Sieler at .368 and .306, respectively. The former of the two has slapped five doubles while each have recorded a triple to their credit. Keke Tholl's five home runs lead U of M while posting a .224 average. 

Lauren Derkowski has the team's best 1.83 ERA with 24 earned runs and a whopping 113 strikeouts to her credit, going 9-6 in the circle while Jessica LeBeau is 5-7 with a 3.10 ERA allowing 32 earned runs. 

Since 2003, Oakland and Michigan have met three times on the diamond with all three meetings going to the Maize and Blue.

 


SYD JUST WINS, WINS, WINS
Redshirt junior pitcher, Sydney Campbell, secured her 49th career win in the circle for Oakland on March 22 in the first half of a doubleheader with IUPUI. Campbell bests Jessica Granger's record set from 2007-2009.

PICKED FIRST… AGAIN!
The Golden Grizzlies are slated to be first in the Horizon League for the 2023 season as voted on by the conference's Head Coaches back on February 8 with eight of the nine first-place votes.

STARTING AT 100
Head Coach Lauren Karn will start the 2023 campaign with 100 wins in her pocket as the all-time winningest head coach in Oakland Softball history. Prior to THE Spring Games on February 24, Karn sits at 100-104 in her five-year career. 

A STORM IN THE CIRCLE
Pitcher Sydney Campbell returns to play as the reigning #HLSB Pitcher of the Year following a 2.23 earned run average with only 204 hits allowed in 864 at-bats the La Grange, Ohio native has faced. Campbell's name is littered through the OU record book as she's first in-season appearances (43) and season wins (23).
