Men’s Basketball Squares Off Against Bowling Green In Home Opener

ROCHESTER, Mich. - The Golden Grizzlies men's basketball team returns home after a two-game road stint to open play at home against Bowling Green State Tuesday, with tip-off set for 7:00 p.m. ET.

Cheer on the Grizzlies and help celebrate Coach Kampe for a 40th Year Salute as the longest-tenured Division I Head Coach embarks on his 40th year in charge of the Golden Grizzlies.

Oakland (0-2, 0-0 HL) battled against nationally ranked Illinois last Friday (Nov. 10) but fell in the final minutes. The Golden Grizzlies came out firing as it scored the game's first eight points before the Fighting Illini caught up. Oakland played hand-in-hand with Illinois in the opening 20 and went into the locker only down one, 28-27. Oakland continued to match Illinois' pace of play, but a 16-0 run as time was winding down was too much for an Oakland comeback as it dropped its second game of the season, 64-53.

Oakland was led by junior Trey Townsend who recorded the team's first double-double of the season, his tenth of this career, after a game-high 19 points and 10 boards. The forward also led the team with three steals and was a perfect 5-of-5 from the charity stripe. Forward Chris Conway followed suit and shot 57.1% from the field (4-of-7) for second-most points among Golden Grizzlies.

Oakland shot 35.5% (11-of-31) from the field with three 3-pointers in the first half and continued to improve throughout. The Golden Grizzlies came out of the locker room and made 10 of 25 shots (.400) to wrap up the game 37.5% from the floor.

SCOUTING THE FALCONS
The Golden Grizzlies take on the Falcons for the 12th time in school history, dating back to 1998 where Oakland dropped a road game, 70-59. The Golden Grizzlies look to even the series up at 6-6 and break a three-game losing streak. Prior to the loss in December of 2019, the Golden Grizzlies won all five games in-a-row which spanned 12 years time. During the streak Oakland averaged 81.4 points per game while Bowling Green totaled 67.6 points per game. Overall, the Golden Grizzlies outscore the Falcons, 73.6-70.9. Both teams perform well inside its home arena, as the Golden Grizzlies are 4-2 with home court advantage but 1-4 on the road. The Falcons narrowly escaped with a win last time these two faced off and edged the Golden Grizzlies, 87-82. With a matchup on home court last season, Oakland rallied from a six-point halftime deficit and had the lead with under a minute to go, but a Bowling Green layup followed by free throws put the game to rest.

Bowling Green State (2-0, 0-0 MAC) most recently took down Arkansas State, 81-75, after it opened its season with a win against Chicago State, 70-41. The Falcons will hit the road for its first away game of the season when it visits Oakland.

In its win against Arkansas State, junior Marcus Hill led the team with 26 points (9-of-17 FG) with five rebounds and had eight points via the charity stripe. Leading the way for the Falcons, Hill paced the team in points in the season opener with 18 points (7-of-14 FG) and five rebounds once again.

This season, the Falcons have beat out its opposition in nearly all statistical categories as the team is nearly 50% from the field (56-of-119, .471) and holds its opponents to 38.0% (46-of-121). On average, the Falcons grab five more boards per game and have a turnover margin of +3.

Tip-off from the OU Credit Union O'rena is slated for 7 PM ET Tuesday, Nov. 14.
