ESPN2 Game Awaits Oakland at Youngstown State

ROCHESTER, Mich. – Oakland University Men's Basketball will return to the ESPN nationally-televised stage on Friday, January 27 at 9:00 pm in the Beeghly Center for a rematch with Youngstown State. The "Voice of the Golden Grizzlies" Neal Ruhl will be on the call with the Audacy App.

The Golden Grizzlies finished off Detroit Mercy 76-67 on Monday night to advance to an eight-game winning streak in Calihan Hall, the longest of any of the Titans' opponents while winning 12 of the last 13 games in the Metro Series. Previously, Marquette held the longest winning streak at seven games.

Trey Townsend finished another milestone on Monday night as well with his 500th career rebound to his name. Jalen Moore racked up 32 points for a season-high in all 40 minutes of play, tacking on seven assists and three steals to his stat line.

Oakland's defense held Detroit Mercy's Antoine Davis to 14 points where the All-Time Point pursuer averaged an NCAA-high 27, coming off a 42-point game against IUPUI.

Townsend is the team's leading scorer at 16.6 points per game with Moore and Keaton Hervey just behind at 16.3 and 12.3, respectively. Moore has scored 20-plus points in his last five games dating back to Wright State on January 8.

Moore is in a tie for 17th in NCAA Division I in total assists with 107, 11th in assists per game at 5.9 through his 18 games. This mark also leads the Horizon League.

Oakland's game against the Penguins on Friday will be a red out in the Beeghly Center for the second-straight game. The Golden Grizzlies are 1-0 already in red-out games with the only win coincidentally coming at Detroit Mercy.

Townsend and Moore are sixth and seventh, respectively, in #HLMBB points per game with their previously mentioned marks while Blake Lampman continues to lock down fifth in three-point field goal percentage at .336 (43-128).

Lampman and Moore are a force in the conference with the second and fourth-best margins in steals per game with 2.1 and 1.9 a game from each, respectively. Townsend ranks fourth in #HLMBB in blocked shots as the Oxford native is solid for 1.1 a game with 24 total.

As a team, the Golden Grizzlies are the third-best free-throw shooting team in the conference at 74.9% (227-370).

Oakland and Youngstown State's January 27 contest in Ohio has been picked up by ESPN2, the second national-televised ESPN game for the Golden Grizzlies this season. Tipoff is slated for 9:00 pm ET.

Townsend was named to the Lou Henson Award Watchlist on November 22 as one of four #HLMBB student-athletes listed.

Moore was the lone Golden Grizzly named to the Preseason #HLMBB All-League Team honor with OU predicted fourth with two first-place votes in the preseason poll as Purdue Fort Wayne and Northern Kentucky tied for the top honor. The Horizon League and ESPN released the annual wildcard selections for national telecasts with Oakland on four of the five potential selected dates, denoted on the team's schedule page and the game notes.

Head Coach Greg Kampe enters his 39th season at the helm for Oakland University as the second-longest tenured coach in NCAA Division I basketball behind Jim Boeheim from Syracuse, who is in his 42nd season. Kampe has posted a 671-515 (56.8%) career record.

The early signing period has come for OU as Aundre Polk will join the team on The Blacktop in the fall of 2023. Polk is a former MAC All-Freshman Team member at Central Michigan.

SCOUTING REPORT

YOUNGSTOWN STATE

The Penguins are 7-2 in home contests entering the weekend, heading into the game with OU following a 88-75 loss to Milwaukee in Wisconsin on January 21. With a 7-3 #HLMBB record, YSU looks to sweep the season series with Oakland after the 85-69 win in Rochester on January 14.

Dwayne Cohill leads the 'guins with 17.1 points per game followed shortly by Malek Green and Brandon Rush at 14.6 and 14.4, respectively. Cohill ranks fourth in the conference while Green and Rush lock down 11th and 12th.

On the defensive end, NKU grad transfer Adrian Nelson is good for 9.1 boards per contest for second in #HLMBB. Cohill has the seventh-best mark in steals in the conference with 33, 1.6 per game.

Both teams are 7-3 entering Friday's bout with the Penguins in third with their tiebreakers while Oakland is fifth.

NO MERCY
Oakland has now won eight-straight in Calihan Hall, the best record of any of the Titans' opponents in history. Marquette held the previous record of 7-0 until January 23 when Oakland won the 12th of the last 13 games in the Metro Series 76-67.

1,000 POINT CLUB
Townsend became the 37th Golden Grizzly to reach 1,000 career points in the team's overtime win against IUPUI off a free throw. Townsend then followed it up with his 500th rebound in the win versus Detroit Mercy.

100 #HLMBB VICTORIES
Coach Kampe and the program registered its 100th #HLMBB win against Wright State on January 8. Kampe is the fourth coach in the conference to reach this feat.

FIRST POTW IN THE NEW YEAR
Moore garnered the team's first Nike #HLMBB Player of the Week Award on Monday, January 2 with an average of 21 points and 6.5 assists in the team's wins over Milwaukee and Green Bay in Rochester.

DA-DA-DA  DA-DA-DA
Moore and Hervey connected from a steal for the off-the-glass slam by the grad transfer from Missouri State for the team's first #SCTop10 of the 2022-23 season, coming in at No. 10 in the daily ESPN show on October 20.

NEW FACES
The Golden Grizzlies welcome in four transfers, two from the power five-level, Rocket Watts (Mississippi State), Lorne Bowman (Wisconsin), Keaton Hervey (Missouri State), and Chuol Deng (Hill College). Three freshmen join the new class Cooper Craggs, Dominic Capriotti, and Evan Solomon.

NEW HEAT IN MIAMI
Oakland's own Jamal Cain has earned a contract with the Miami Heat for the upcoming season wearing No. 8. Cain is just the latest active Golden Grizzly in the NBA with Kendrick Nunn, a regular part of the Los Angeles Lakers rotation.
